    Help j1 expiring

    Advertisements

I am on j1 visa doing my residency and the ds2019 is suppose to expire this month. (I finish off cycle) I was not aware that I could not apply for a j1 waiver job or apply for fellowship (with applying for extension) after this ds2019 had already expired. Does anyone have advice?

you have to leave the United States when your DS2019 expires. That's what the J1 visa says. if you want, you can phone the ECFMG people who issued your DS2019 for clarification on the visa rules.

If you get another contract for another position, you can apply for another J1 visa. Once you are back home, you can travel to the US to go on interviews, and if you get another contract for more training like a fellowship you can apply for another J1 visa. Suppose you get a contract for a fellowship for July 2015, you can apply for another J 1 visa. But you have to leave the US once your DS2019 expires. Ask the ECFMG how long you have in the US to gather your belongings, it's something like 30 days, but ask them because they know the rules.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone know how the return of service works after the second initial J1 visa. If I wanted apply for immigrant status after the second J1 how long will the return of service be at that point?

What return of service? did you sign a return of service contract? don't misunderstand the two year home country presence requirement. Ask the people who issued your DS2019 to explain it again. You would have received info on this when you got your DS2019, so check your records too, that should help.
