Hello, you mention that the above apply to medical students in their final year. When I was in my final year of medical school a few years ago I believe the exams etc were required for me.
    Now...
I am from Alberta and I am in my final year of residency in the US.
I have not taken the Canadian exams but am currently applying for fellowship..
Does anyone know if Alberta still requires us to take those exams before fellowship can begin...

I tried emailing my inquiries to j1visa ..but I get an automatic replying saying to person is out for a month and have not been able to find the answer yet.

    Hello,
the original post is from November 2012.
I am pretty sure that MCC exams are not required because the post says :
The following are no longer required:Medical Council of Canada examinations.

Having said that, you should have done them anyway because they are required for a standard Canadian medical licence across Canada.
I don't know where you will end up in Canada for your medical practice, but the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta normally requires that you have the LMCC to get a medical licence.

Here is a quote from the Alberta College :

successful completion of a Specialty residency in Canada and both the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) and specialty certification of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCP/S(C))

Thank you for your response. It isn't so much that I don't want to take these exams but it is a matter of timing for me. I am trying to find out if I can apply for fellowship within the US without having taken these exams. ie. will I have problems with statement of need/J1 visa to start fellowship.

Either during or after fellowship I may plan to sit down to take those exams. For me, that would be ideal...

Would you be able to post the link of where it says the exams are not required ...
Also I know Alberta has always been a little different from other provinces when it comes to J1 visa rules.

All you have to do is go to the health canada website and look at the process for applying for a statement of need.
As far as I know, there have been many changes since 2012 but the specific changes are not discussed on the site because that just confuse people.
