Visa question for 3rd year med student (canadian)

    Advertisements

    Hello

I am confused as to what Visa I need for my IM core rotation for 12 weeks. can anyone help?

I was told by the school (AUA) that I need a B1 visa, which is easy to get at customs, but customs told me that J1 is needed because 12 weeks is too long for a B1 visa...

Have anyone heard about this? any information is welcomed. Thank you

The customs officer must have been stupid. B1 can be given up to 1 year (like mine), but there are stories of officers accidentally giving it for more, and stories of 3 month or 6 month B1 visas.

J1 visa is a WORK visa, and you can't get this without a bunch of other things (ECFMG certificate, MD diploma, residency position)

edit: try again with a different border/customs officer, Buffalo and Toronto airport are probably the most popular entry-points.

Yes the CBP officer was incorrect.
    It's definitely a B1 visa, NOT the J1.
I think they just listen to buzz words, so the first thing I would say is that I'M NOT GETTING PAID, I"M PAYING TUITION!
Clinical rotations are far in excess of 1 year, so you need the visa for longer than a year. Mine was given for 72 weeks.
Just as an aside, my biggest hassles at the border were when I was in student status (I am Canadian). Since H1B status, the border issues have significantly declined.
