Question regarding J1 and Statement of Needs for Ontario resident

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,
Long time reader (thanks for all the tips on USMLE) here.
I am an Ontario resident and I want to apply for Neurology in the States next year.
Most of the programs I am interested in only sponsor J1.
Now the question is.... as an Ontario resident, how likely it is for me to obtain a Statement of Needs for Neurology programs? Do I have to apply through CaRMS to show that I can't match in Canada in order to obtain that Statement of Needs letter?
    THAAAANK YOU SO MUCH
I am quite worried about that J1 visa right now.

No, you do not need to go through CaRMS. Each year in the fall, around late September if I recall correctly, the ministry of health in Ontario publishes a list of needed specialties. For 2010, Ontario was supporting upto 125 visas on a first come, first served basis for RCPSC recognized specialties. Visas were supported regardless of specialty, but as the limit was approached, priority was given to the specialties that were on the list of needed specialties. Neurology was not on that list in 2010, and the list does not change much from year to year. I would contact the J1 visa program administrator at Health Canada directly for the 2012 list in the fall, or if you want to see this year's list. They are extremely helpful and reply promptly.
