J-1 visa: program sponsorship vs. getting it yourself

    Advertisements

    Hey all,

Some residency programs state that they do not sponsor visas. My question is: is it possible to obtain a J-1 visa without this sponsorship? If so, then does that mean that I would still be eligible to apply to such programs?

That's what I thought too, but some program websites say that b/c they don't sponsor visas you should be able to get one yourself. Does that mean that its difficult to get one w/o a sponsorship or simply not possible?

    sponsors

Technically for a J-1 visa, ECFMG is your sponsor. If you are applying for an H1b then the hospital is your sponsor. You will have to contact the hospital on what exactly they mean and will allow.

true true, but you still need to match in order for the ECFMG to sponsor you for the J1, which means that the hospital has to be willing to accept the J1 (otherwise you wouldn't have matched in the first place). The ECFMG isn't just going to hand you a J1 if you don't match into a program (same with pre-matching).

Nice to see you around buddy, hope you're surviving at our old stomping grounds!

I've come across a bunch of programs too that say that they will accept a J1 visa but not sponsor it. So does that basically mean that if I match into such a program they will not help me in obtaining a J1? Has anyone here successfully obtained a J1 from ECFMG without being sponsored by their program?
