What is an IMG friendly hospital?

    Advertisements

hi, im new here so if im repeating the same question please forgive me. i treid searching it alot on google but couldn't really find an answer to this so please help me out here if you can.
So as far as I know, IMG friendly means hosptial that usually take foreigners as residents. But does that mean they help them with visas?
I understand most residents are sponosred either J1 or H1. But I heard that J1 isn't sponsored by the hospital anyway, its done through ECFMG so then how come there are lists of hospitals on forums and sites that talk about what programs offer J1 and what don't? Does the hospital have any control over sponsoring J1? This is a bit confusing to me.
Please clarify this if you can. Thanks.

See this list IMG Friendly Hospitals, International ValueMD Medical Schools Forum

As far as the visa and immigration issues. Based on what I hear on the grapevines, most hospitals and residency programs don't sponsor J1 visas unless you're doing a fellowship and intend to return to your country. It's understandable since they would rather not deal with all the paperworks and because they already have so many US citizens and permanent residents applying to their residency programs. Most of the foreign medical school graduates that I know came to the US several years ago on these types of H1 and J1 visas and did research under a PI or reserach institution that sponsored them. There were also several others who came to the US with a spouse (who is a US citizen) and then became permanent residents and applied for residency programs. Bottom line: don't expect hospitals or resdiency programs to help deal with immigration issues. Better to find another way to come to the US and then apply to a residency program as a US citizen or permanent resident.
