H-1B Visa Appointment Date and Location Question

    Advertisements

    Dear Members,

I got into a residency program that sponsors H-1B and the paper work with the school is not yet completed (just received the documents today). I live in Toronto, Canada. I have 2 questions:

    1. Being a native of Toronto, is it mandatory to apply for a visa appointment in the Toronto Consulate itself, or may I apply at any US Consulate in Canada? The waiting time in Toronto is more than 2 months, while in places like Quebec it is only 7-10 days.

    2. Do I have to wait till the documentation processing (both from hospital & lawyer) is complete before I book an appointment for the visa, or can I book a date well in advance so that lot of time can be saved?

I appreciate expert comments and advise.

    Thanks & Regards,
    YS

    Yamunas,

    1. You can apply for a H-1B visa at any American consulate in Canada. Appointments may be scheduled online at www.nvars.com as you probably know (since you already checked waiting periods).

    2. Is is advisable to book a date in advance but the system will not let you register more than 7 weeks (50 days) in advance. You must have all your paperwork ready in order to appear for an appointment.
It is not a bad thing about a tale to understand only half of it.
