    semmelweis university

I have actually been to semmelweis university and it is definately a legit place. It is a major medical school in hungary, with many hospital and research affiliations in in the Budapest area alone. I have never inquired into their english program, but i am sure that it is legit if it exists.

    cali

I do not think that the english program is approved in cali or NM though. I think Szeged is the only program in hungary that is. Check with the cali board to find out.

For sure, check with Pat Park, but the English program is approved.

Semmelweis is the largest medical school in Hungary. As stated above, the English program IS California approved, but I recommend that everyone who is interested check with the Medical Board anyway.

I understand that Semmelweis is working on their website, so the only English language information you will find is listed below. The main webpage is www.sote.hu

    http://www.sote.hu/oktatas/adm_acad_bulletin.pdf
    http://www.sote.hu/oktatas/applic_form.pdf

The bulletin is pretty comprehensive regarding the basics. If you are serious about coming to Hungary, I highly recommend that you read the other threads about Hungarian schools (including Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs) on this forum to get a better idea about pros and cons.

I have several reservations about programs in Eastern Europe and specifically in Hungary, which I have detailed there.

If you are interested in specific information, I may be able to point you in the right direction.

    Good luck.

(Edited repost) Hope that this helps...

Generally speaking, all the English programs at Hungarian universities are the more or less the same. Their curriculum is very similar.

Before I would (again) consider attending a Hungarian medical school, Iwould ask myself where I would want to practice medicine after I graduate?

If the answer is North America, I would seriously consider choices other
    than Hungary unless I:

    a) spoke Hungarian fairly well
    b) had an understanding of the Hungarian educational system and
    local culture
    c) lacked a four year premed University degree

    Why?

    I. Hungarian educational programs are (to say the least) very traditional systems. The relationship between teacher and student is very old fashioned, even in the English language programs. The professor has absolute power and the student is barely acknowledged. As the examinations are 85% oral and (!) subjective, it is a very foolish student that gets on the bad side of his/her professor. (Most telling question about how an examination will turn out, just prior to starting it: "Why haven't
    you been attending my lectures?")

II. The theoretical education is stressed at the expense of the clinical education. Anyone who completed premed education in North America prior to coming to Hungary is wasting a good part of the first year where basic sciences are taught. (See also point IV)

*Worse, unless you have connections (don't believe oral promises!) you will not be exempted from the classes you have already completed elsewhere, as each department sets its own rules for exempting students from their courses. As the departments are most likely reimbursed based on a per head formula, this almost never takes place.

III. Length of program: 6 years! If you have premed education, you have other options.

IV. Preparation for North America. Hungarian med education does not prepare you for the USMLE nor does it provide you with appropriate clinical experience.

With regard to clinical education, North American med students are simply on a higher plane, as they are expected to contribute to their team during their clerkships. No such expectation exists in most departments in Hungary, where local as well as foreign med students are often ignored while in clinic, as clinicians earn more money from clinical rather than teaching activities. (This is due to the low earning power of clinicians, who receive a starting salary of about $400 per month[at market exchange rates], and often rely on tips from patients to make ends meet.)

    V. Cultural differences. You will be perceived as a rich foreigner, who can pay the ~ $9000/year tuition. This can cause problems. Although not all administrators are money-grubbers, some of the administrators who run those programs seem like that. The plethora of charges that you will be assessed will astound you.

Additionally, language and cultural barriers can be a significant problem (I believe that merits a post of its own).

Now, if you are not planning on practicing medicine in North America once you are done you might find the education very useful.

    -Miklos

PS With regard to Semmelweis (or any other school for that matter), I very highly recommend that you visit the school, check out its facilities and speak to the English program students (in person and unsupervised) prior to commiting yourself.

    ...

Without knowing your background or motivation to attend med school in Hungary, I don't think that anyone can fairly answer this question.

    What is your educational background?
    What is your nationality?
What is your motivation for Hungary?
What do you prefer, a small city with a small program or a metropolis with a big program?

With regards to a UK residency, nationality in an EU country is a definitive advantage.

With regards to the US, note that as of now, Semmelweis and Szeged are approved in California.

The Secretariat office @ Semmelweis is not very good at communicating information with its students. Often students are left running around and asking eachother everything. Having spent 3 terms at Semmelweis I know that all the students seems to be running around trying to get information until one gets information and word spreads to the rest of the students through their peers.
