    Electronic Medical Records

    Advertisements

I met a gentleman at the AAPI conference last week who owns a Medical Records software company. He mentioned he could set up a curriculum for students in preparation for rotations: getting used to computer-based records systems.

Obviously his interest is in gaining future business for graduates when they begin private practice. What I am wondering is if any of you feel you would benefit from this sort of teaching/experience prior to hitting the hospital setting?

    Thanks!

I graduated med school 8 years ago and became an IT executive (strange long story) but now I am returning to medicine.

I would advise people to jump on this. I don't know how it will be viewed as a rotation on the transcript but there is a real world need for this.

It will eventually be part of the curriculum I think.

Don't call it "getting used to EMR" though. Get real about this. Provide a course and even a rotation in Applied Clinical Informatics.

    I'm quite serious.

Wrap up all the pertinent legal, technical, and clinical issues into a formal basic science course and even a clinical rotation.

Personally, I intend to make Clinical Informatics part of my practice....perhaps 20% or more. I would also like to get involved in medical education....perhaps in Informatics.

It is an emerging specialty, start covering it. Don't allow it to be relegated to a side issue....it isn't.

Heck, I would love to be involved in organizing something like this myself.

    Regards...

Of course EMR's and EHR's are going to be very helpful in the healthcare industry. This is becoming a revolutionary change in the healthcare industry. Every health app is connected to EHR's in one way or the other. I am pretty sure that you will find the medical records software integrated into every fitness app that we use today.
