Anyone going to the Third Faculty in Prague?

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,

I just got into the Third Faculty of Charles University in Prague an I was wondering if anybody else is going there, too. I thought it might be nice to know some people beforehand.
I am also taking the entrance examination test for Masaryk University and Palacky on the 19th and since I did pretty well in the last one and have an additional two weeks for studying, I'm pretty confident I could get into those too.
Now, I was wondering if anyone here knew something about these Universities or is currently studying there and could give me some basic information on what the schools are like in terms of quality of education, campus life and their teaching hospitals? I did spend a lot of time researching on the internet but I think some first hand information would help me out a lot.

    Cheers

I am currently a 5th year student (soon to be 6th) at the 3rd faculty of medicine.

Quality of education? Well, it will almost always be better in your home country as teachers will be speaking in their native language, you almost certainly already knew this. I just mention it because I always advise students to study in a country where the teachers will teach in their native language. All of the faculties in Prague maintain certain standards. There are certain tasks you have to complete before going to a final exam (credit tests, laboratory reports, histology lab exam, adequate presence at certain classes etc.). At the end of the day, I think most students learn the most from self-study.

Campus life here is quite good. We have a student body (EC-trimed) which organises a couple of events a year. The Czech body (Trimed) organises many events per year. Not many foreign students go to these events but some do (I personally go). We also have a large number of students from Norway and their student body (ANSA) organises many events per year too. You can also play sport at Charles University as an elective course - it is free. At the end of the day there are many opportunities here and it is you to the individual to take the initiative.

The teaching hospital here is overloaded. They have to deal with students in both the Czech and English curriculum. I think that they have mostly had enough of us. The practicals in the hospital are overcrowded. However, if you want to, you can visit the teaching hospital outside of classes. There will always be doctors willing to help you. Like I already mentioned, it is up to the individual to take the initiative.

Thanks for your answer man, I really appreciate it.
I'm actually leaning towards accepting, although I still have some questions. Would you mind telling me more about the practicals and the teaching hospital in particular? I found plenty of information on the Motol, General University and Military Hospitals as those have english translations for their websites, but I'm guessing Third faculty practicals are rarely, if ever, held in one of those. From what I've read, the scale of cooperation between the Medical faculties is rather limited, although I'm not sure whether that's accurate. Do you have an idea on practical teaching at the First and Second faculties and how it compares to the Third?

The majority of practicals are held in Royal Vinohrady Teaching Hospital (Fakultní nemocnice Královské Vinohrady). The third faculty is on the same site as this hospital. We have very few practicals in the Military Hospital (just ear, nose and throat so far). We never have practicals at motol, as you probably know, that is the teaching hospital for the 2nd faculty. We have infectology practicals in 3rd and 5th year at the Bulovka hospital.

Yes, the scale of cooperation between the 3rd faculty and the other faculties is as far as I know, non-existent.
