Any American studying /applied for Charles first faculty/Second of medicine in 2016.

We are american citizens and currently reside in the UAE. My son will be completing his IB Diploma with a predicted score of 42 in the next few months. He wants to study medicine. I work in a hospital and based on the feedback which I have received from various doctors they have highly recommend him to attend med school in Europe: Hungary, Czech Republic. Not only price wise is this the more economical option also he will be able to save at least 2 plus a year as in US system he will do the 4 years undergraduate first and then go to the medical school.

I have 2 questions, once he completes the 6 years Medical program and passes the USMLE Exams will he have any issues finding residency? I also hear that since he is going to med school without completing his undergraduate program will it not have any impact -- true?

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm a student accepted into the first faculty and will be starting this September. As an American citizen, the ideal circumstance would be for your son to complete his medical education and training in the US itself, however as you have mentioned, it is an exorbitant amount.

Regarding your questions, If he passes the USMLE, theoretically, he should be able to find a residency, however in reality the picture is far more complicated. As a foreign graduate, US trained medical graduates will always take priority as countries tend to want home doctors. Given the competitiveness of the profession, in truth, it is unlikely that a foreign medical graduate will easily get a residency of choice in a good hospital. Note that I said "unlikely", not "impossible". An excellent USMLE score is key to success in the US, especially as a foreign graduate.

Since in the US, medicine is a graduate program, during medical school you are trained to complete the USMLE, which is not the case abroad. After graduation abroad, your son will have to take a year off and study separately for the USMLE Part 1, and then the rest.

In short, it is more than possible to further educate yourself and practice in the US as a foreign graduate, the only caveat is that the process is more complicated and good residency programs in good hospitals are very, very competitive.
