Anyone going to First faculty of medicine, Prague?

    Advertisements

Hi guys! I got into the first faculty of medicine in Prague, and I'll be starting this september, i have a bunch of questions for someone who is already in the course.
First of all, I heard that the classes are dispersed everywhere, as in the classes are in different buildings all around the place, I'm thinking of getting a dorm room there so was just wondering if that would be close to the majority of classes?, also is there a library that is open 24x7?
I would also like to know what type of nationalities are there the first year, are there a lot of native english speakers, americans, english? Do people in czech republic generally speak English?
Also, what's the student life like, are there student organisations with parties and get togethers? More importantly is there really any time for parties haha
What percentage of students flunk out the first year? , also is anyone else starting this year?

    Hi !!

Yes, I have been admitted too and hoping to start this September. From what I have seen and heard when I went there, it is a truly multi-cultural place and it is great. There are people from every place. Most people I saw were able to speak English (albeit not that fluently). The staff that I saw were very helpful and had a brilliant command of English. Unfortunately, I have heard the attrition rates are really high, around 40-50% and I presume you won't get much time for parties when you are studying Medicine, especially at the First Faculty ! It is all about maintaining a good work-life balance if you want to pass the course. The course will be long and tough from what I have heard, but is supposedly very prestigious. Can't comment on student life and the classes etc. I guess someone who has lived and studied there can give you a better idea. The infrastructure and the facilities do look amazing and the course is designed to give you a very thorough theoretical knowledge. Prague is relatively cheaper than other major European cities and is a great place to be in.

    Hi Alicia,

Personally, I found the application procedure to be very easy and straightforward. I applied online. Some people do decide to use an agency for their application. Then, you choose a date to write your entrance exams. There are various test centres across the globe. I did my test in Prague, which meant I also got the chance to see the place. Bear in mind not everyone has to do the test. This you have to clarify with the university and depends on your high school grades.

There are lots of American and Canadian students who study in Prague. The place itself is amazing and looks great. I have specified more information in my previous comment above in this thread.

I cannot comment further, as I am only starting this September.

If you do decide to apply, then good luck with your application. Feel free to ask me any questions that you may have and I shall try my best to answer them. Alternatively, you could try finding current students studying there, through forums (especially The Student Room) or via Facebook and contact them.

Hi there. Just finished/finishing my first year at FFM, and think I can answer most of your questions....

Classes are in different buildings (anatomy is in the anatomy building, etc.), but the buildings are pretty close together, especially first year. The dorms, however, are not close to where classes are. Most people (including myself) stayed in the dorms just until they could find a place closer - the dorms let you break your contract with no penalty or anything.

The library situation isn't ideal. Most people have a favorite cafe/coffee shop that they use to study. The library for the Faculty is basically just a lending desk.

With nationalities, people are literally from everywhere. Lots of Brits and Germans, but also everywhere from Thailand to Cyprus to UAE and everywhere in between. Not as many Americans as you would think - there were only 3 or 4 of us in my class. That being said, I haven't had a problem communicating with anyone there.

English is fine for getting around Prague. Obviously, the more Czech you learn, the easier life will be, but don't stress about it. You'll have enough other things to study.

We have a good student organization that not only plans parties and things, but also provides support for things like registering for classes, finding your way around, etc. Which is a lifesaver, since the school admin is not exactly helpful. They do throw some good parties, especially in the beginning of the year to help meet your classmates, etc. There's definitely time to party, if you budget your time right.

Anything else I can help with, let me know.

What is the entrance exam to the first faculty like? How many questions are on the papers and how long are they? My exam is in 2 weeks and they have given little information about the structure of the exams itself.

    Appreciate your help

Hey, I'm giving the entrance exam on the 10th of June as well. I agree that the information about the test itself is almost non-existent. Is the list of topics on the website exhaustive? i.e, will they ask only from those topics? Also what about the math section? There isn't any syllabus for that.

I'm getting a bit worried. Would really love some clarification!
