    Transferring into Clinicals

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I have completed 2 years of a 4 year medical program in Europe and am currently preparing for USMLE Step 1. I would like to transfer into the clinical program at a Caribbean school. Could somebody please advise me if this is possible and which schools are the best to transfer to? I would like to do my clinicals in NY or CA if possible.
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thanks a bunch.

    transfering

I wouldnt doubt that you can apply to all of them. AUC, St Georges and Ross all have rotations in those places, I believe. I have no knowledge about the other schools, but I'm sure someone will speak up.

AUC uses Wyckoff hospital in NY and Kern in California. But for your 4th year, you can go anywhere you want to for your electives.

I think they have an online application...try this: www.aucmed.edu . By the way, some U.S. schools will take fmg transfers as long as you do well on Step 1. I know Tulane is one of them, I believe Drexel is another...cant think of them all offhand...a Texas Univ. in Lubbock used to as well.

    Good luck

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply julestx. I've heard it is extremely difficult to transfer from a foreign school back to a U.S. school and that is why I'm considering the Caribbean. But if I do very well on Step 1 I'll give the U.S. a try and see what happens.

Some more question: When do I have to apply to Caribbean schools to be eligible to transfer into clinicals? Can I start my clinicals mid-way through the year?

    Thanks again for the help.

    transfering

I am not sure about the timeline for transfering to AUC, but I would think you could do it at anytime if its just for clinical years? Not sure. But call MEIO (medical education information office) and speak to someone there (305)446-0600. One person who deals with clinical rotations is Phil Green, and Victor Hidalgo is the man for electives information.

Other than that, maybe you could just ask for someone to help you with an admissions question...but I dont know who that would be.

This office is in Coral Gables, FL, so you know what time-zone you're dealing with.

Someone else will have to chime in with the info for Ross and SGU.

    transfer...

SGU to my knowledge has not accepted any students into their third or fourth year. I know a few that have transfered into the school but they had to repeat the first year. I am not sure about the other carib schools.
