Getting USCE while I'm still a Medicine student

    Advertisements

I'm a 3rd year student from Romania. I will sit for the USMLE Step 1 in november, this year.. The Medical educational system in Romania consists of 6 years of Medical School before rezidency, so I have 3 years left in which I am planning to strengthen my resume.

I read what a lot of people had to say about the whole process of getting into a US Residency Program and I saw that in order to get into very good programs, besides very good USMLE scores, is highly recommended to have some USCE and/or research experience with published papers.

I also understood that, concerning USCE, it is most valued the hands-on experience (for obvious reasons) which is represented by clinical rotations and externships. I didn’t read a lot about the second choice (because from what I know is for graduates). As for clinical rotations, I saw there is a wide range of opportunities (I mean, lots of Universities accept International Students to do 1 to 3 months of rotations on lots of specialties, some for money, some pretty much free).

I am interested in talking to people that did some rotations; if there is someone, please contact me here, on this thread, on pm or through mail (nastaimanuel@yahoo.com). I am curious to know which are the conditions in getting accepted how could I improve my chances of getting accepted in doing rotations in surgery or other tough to get into specialties.

Also, does anybody know any other way of strengthening my CV (while I’m still a student)? Research for me doesn’t sound that appealing because I think you waste a lot of time in that and it doesn’t grant you anything for sure.. (you gotta be productive and publish papers in order to be able to use it). In fact I have no idea what kind of research I could do in the Surgery field (‘cause that’s what I want to do).. If someone could enlighten me I’d be very thankful.

Thank you all for your time!! I promise to post everything that I'll find and it's helpful for the students who wish to do the same things that I do. I will also appreciate every one of your thoughtful responses!

When I said I'm interested in finding the conditions in being accepted for a rotation I meant the means of accepting me, not you for example.. not the program requirements (those are stated on the websites of the universities).. Thanks
