    Clerkship hours per day??

    Advertisements

    Hi guys..

Can anyone tell me, what an average day during a clerkship is like? How many hours/day wd i be required to be there? Are they the same for all the medschools?
I am a final year student and i plan to go to US for a clerkship and i am not sure whether i would be getting enough time to study for usmle step 2 along with it.
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies...

    Thanks.

depends on the core andf the hospital.

IM-usually from 6-7am to 3-7pm, then call every 3-5 days. some teams require you to stay overnight, others just want you to get 2-3 admissions
Surgery-5-6am-5-7pm with call every 2-4 days and they are all usually overnight
Others-vary on depending on outpatient office hours, hospital rounds etc

    Internal medicine hours

I am currently in internal med clerkship. The hours are long. You come in before 7 am and usually done between 4 and 5. However, expect to stay later. Three days a week, we have a 5 pm lecture for the med students.
Call is q4. IF you have call on a weekday, you are there till 8 pm because they have a nightfloat. If you have weekend long call, You come in at 7 am on Sat and end at 1 pm on Sun.

And the hours at the hospital are busy. You don't get time to study too much. I lost about 10 pounds due to working and not getting a chance to eat.

Thanks rrod and TropicMD for the replies...

Few more questions... Do visiting clerkship students have to work(in terma of hours) as hard/harder than the actual students?
Are there longer hours in private than public/county hospitals?
When u select the clerkship, do the hospital/school authorities inform u how many hours r normally taken up and the schedule?
And finally, is it worth spending big money to do a clerkship in harvard/yale?

    Thanks so much in advance

you aren't separetd by visiting or on site students. everyone goes into the same team pool. the hospital admin has no say on the hours you work or what your call schedule is like, that is solely left up to the department you are rotating to set guidelines and your individual team's call schedule and working hours.

public/vs county depends on the area, if you are in a county or community hospital in a big city like detroit, chicago, dallas, etc you will not notice much difference other than possibly sending codes to the county hospital. i would imagine the rural hospitals are quieter

Can someone explain to me what is ment by q4? Also, from what I read from the previous posts, you only have to show up 3-5 days during clerkships? I thought it was a 9-5, 5 days a week thing. How often do you have to go in on weekends?

    Clerkship Hours

3-5 days/week? You might work that on some elective rotations, but never cores. Cores will keep you busy 5 and sometimes 6-7 days/week. Depending on the site and rotation, you will most definitely be working weekends. In internal medicine, only 2 times did I have a full weekend off during the entire rotation.
