"At the heart of volunteerism are the ideals of service and solidarity and the belief that together we can make the world a better place. In that sense, we can say that volunteerism is the ultimate expression of what the United Nations is all about."

    I applaud anyone volunteering.

However, to eqaute volunteerism with the UN is IMO very, very naive.

The United Nations offers many ways for the richer nations to help the poorer nations of the World. They offer many programs to help with hunger, disease, education and disaster relief. These are facts! If you wish I can point you in the right direct.

I don't mean to start a flame war, but in my view, this is largely an illusion. For instance, take note of the following:
    • The Oil for Food scandal.
    • Immediately after the Tsunami, the U.N. was no where to be seen. U.S. and Australian troops carried much of the burden in Aceh for months. What the U.N. was good at was claiming credit for the US Aid convoys, etc... and holding press conferences.
    • The U.N. Human Rights Commissions membership includes some of the most eggregious violators of human rights, for instance Sudan, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia.
    • A very significant part of the membership is despotic and tyrannical at home, but suddendly believes in democracy when it comes to the UN General Assembly.
The UN in my fundamental opinion is a sham, plain and simple, that is mainly used as a platform for anti-Americanism.

    My mentor said it best..........

Do it anyway ---the verse written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others would destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

Miklos I am no expert in the field and I have not taken the Intro to U.N. class at my school but I'd still say that the U.N. are doing more good than harm. The factors you pointed out are imperfections that could exist in any organization.

If the mentioned countries do not become members then they are isolated from the rest of the world, at least by partaking in the U.N. there is more grounds for communication and some pressure is put on the governments to respect certain guidelines, even if this does not happen in every case.

IMO, UN volunteers don't even have to agree with the political decisions of the organization; they are making a positive difference on a humanitarian and/or ecological level and that should be enough reason for anyone to volunteer for any group.
