    UNIBe in costa Rica thoughts?

    Hi,

I heard there is a branch of UNIBE in Costa Rica offering medical degrees.
Has anyone here attended the school?
How are the facilities , courses, living conditions, etc?
What types of loans are available?
Is there housing nearby to the school , i.e walking distance?

What states can you do clinicals in?
    Anyone from Florida there?

    Thanks

They have a students life department that can help you find apartments near the school, ect. If you want to apply there is still time, make sure to add the school code when you fill out your fafsa on the web. Look for foreign school in the list of states and type "san jose" as the city.

    best regards

UNIBE is one of the worst medical schools in Costa Rica. It graduates some of the most terrible and incompetent doctors in the country and possibly the world. Seriously, I am not kidding nor exagerating. If you can avoid it, it would be better. It's a disgrace for the practice of medicine in Costa Rica. Because of universities like that is that foreigners leave the country with a wrong impression

Wow, a lot of smack being talked in this thread.

I've been living in Costa Rica for the last three years, am married to a Costa Rican, have a Costa Rican daughter, and speak Spanish. If anyone has any questions beyond what I put in this post, please feel free to PM me.

Let's start with one thing. People here in CR speak SPANISH. There is not medical program in this country that is taught in English. Many of my professors (I'm a pharmacy student,) speak English, but Spanish is the norm. EXPECT TO LEARN SPANISH.

I'm a student at UNIBE. Is is one of the three top schools here for medicine. Every school in Costa Rica has to meet a certain standard to teach through an organization from the government called CONESUP. Without that, they cannot offer a degree. In addition, there is an organization that accredits the programs by international standards called SINAES. All the medical programs that are worth going to, which is most of them, are accredited through SINAES. EVERY education program in the country must be accredited by CONESUP to issue degrees.

As for people saying this school, or that school, gives the best or worst doctors. That's all flack. There's absolutely no difference in the MD's produced here based on where they study. The only difference is the teaching culture, the access to more modernized technology, and how laid back and/or rigorous they approach the medicine. Regardless, everyone has to pass the same standards to be a doctor. That's why many MANY people here drop out before they ever become doctors. Some schools push you harder, others let you fall on your face. UNIBE is somewhere in between. Don't expect to have an easy time in class, but also don't expect to be so consumed that you want to pull your hair out. Also, in this country there's no such thing as an elective course. Everyone studies the same material, every time. They might name some of their classes differently from one school to another, or put the order of the classes differently, but each university regurgitates the same stuff; they have to meet the standard given by the government. This is a socialist democracy. It's not like the US.

UNIBE in Costa Rica is approved for Stafford loans only for the Pharmacy and Psychology programs. Period. - as of 2014 -
I don't know anything about private loans, because I don't need them. (I'm using my Post 911 GI Bill.)

At least my university offers an intensive Spanish course that costs $1000 in tuition and runs a complete semester. This would make the entire medical program 14 semesters.

University in Costa Rica has no breaks. Expect to do 3 semesters a year with less than two weeks in between. This is why people graduate so fast here.... if you pass, IF.

    ------------------

Now for a bit of entertaining facts for those who haven't lived in Central/South America or the Caribbean. Universities in these countries have full time employees who are paid to go online and hurl abuse about other schools and disinformation all over the internet. Take anything you read from someone with a grain of salt. Especially if you cannot reach them afterward and they have less than 3 posts to their account. I.E. they make fake accounts.
