GPAs and MCAT scores for Australian schools?

    Advertisements

Does anyone know what kind of GPA and MCAT score are required to get admitted as an International student to Australian schools? I'm Canadian and I have an A- average (80-84) and a 34P on my MCAT. Should I write my MCAT again? (I'm pretty sure I can do at least two or three points better) Also, are things like volunteering relevant, I know that each school's website makes no mention of volunteering or extracurrics, but I was wondering if someone could confirm that? Thanks for any help
    Cheers!

    re: gpa/mcat/extracurric-

    Hey,

I'm a student like yourself. I've asked this question here and in www.studentdoctor.net, and I got a bit more response over there.

From what I can see you're fairly competitive. You should get an interview if you send your app in. Even though you're "late" right now, I've been told that they still accept international applications for a while yet (although they did say that you should get it in asap, so that they can grant you an interview).

From my point of view your mcat score is fine. If you want to write it again they will wait for the second score (but you may have to go to australia for an interview that late in the year, or do a phone interview)

If you are planning on applying, then you should be aware that you can apply to Flinders and Sydney directly (ie. not through acer). By doing this you increase your chances of getting in somewhere, since Acer will only grant you one interview at one school.

    hope I've helped

    Cheers,

    thanks for the help

Hey, thanks for the info. I checked out studentdoctor.net and got some answers. I think I'm going to wait this year and just apply to Canadian schools. Last year I only applied to UBC because I was living in Asia and wouldn't have been able to come home for more than one interview, but I got a rude awakening regarding my lack of volunteering and extracurricular activities (or rather, extracurricular activities that are deemed valid and useful by UBC). I'll give almost everywhere in Canada a shot, because I would rather be home because of the cost factor and ease of working here when I'm finished (although my "plan" is to spend a couple of decades working in various countries outside of North America...). I will write the MCAT again because that might give me a scholarship in OZ, or even in the US (which is the only way I could afford to go there) maybe if I do some solid studying this time. Thanks again and good luck getting in down under!
    Cheers!

    MCATS

There is a "way" to avoid having 2 use MCATs you can always apply to the undergrad programs.

Monash is only 5 years which is one more year than others...there are also some 6 year programs.

But that being said you will probably get into Flinders/Sydney...
