    Advice about AUC

    Hi there,

my advice to you is do not go to AUC. I have friends who went there and it was terrible nightmare for them.

The school is a total rip off. They charged my friends $6600 per semester. Now the tuition is like 8500 or 9000 per semester. And 10,000 per semester for clinicals

The profs are horrible. So you basically teach yourself.

The island has an enormously high crime rate.

They lie about their USMLE pass rate. One third of each class fails.

They send 80% of their students to England or Ireland for clinicals. If you want any electives in the U.S. you must set them up yourself.

The owner of the school is a known criminal.

Don't go to AUC. It really is a big mistake.

Oh yeah, and they accept anyone that applies. Basically as long as you send a completed application form with the fee you will be mailed a letter of acceptance.

    any other thoughts?

just one question...did you actually go to AUC or is this what you heard about the school? I've done a lot of research, and spoken to many people regarding AUC. I've heard a lot of good things, and as with any school, some bad things as well. However, it's important to get information first hand...I appreciate the time you took to respond, but I am still considering AUC. Are there any other opinions regarding AUC? I know I asked this question in the last post, but are there any other Canadians currently there, or who will be attending AUC for the Sept. class? I'm from Toronto, Ontario...and trying to find a reasonable flight to St. Maarten has been quite difficult! (looking ~$1000/ticket). Anyway, any comments or suggestions would be great...

    Thanks,
    SSRN

    grow up

anoncan: Did you even attend AUC or is this a hostile attitude because you got rejected? Your FREINDS..key word "Friends" not you, went there. it was a nightmare for THEM. the school is not a rip off compared to other tuition costs I have seen from schools not worth spit. and the profs are horrible? Well I attended a top notch college here in NJ and I can tell you first hand, not from what i "heard from friends" that I had some pretty horrible profs myself. I took an upper level bio class at Columbia Univ last summer (IVY league) and the prof was horrible (in my eyes at least) so there was 3G down the drain not counting the "experience" which as any visa add would say is "priceless". the crime rate is high you said? hmm have you looked at states in US cities? everywhere you go there is crime, so that is no reason for one not to attend a school. Lie about USMLE pass rate? hmm after all these years I am sure they would have been sued for false advertising. one third of the class failed? were your friends part of this one third that made it such a nightmare for them? people fail in med school yes, but who said SSRN was going to be a part of that one third? what about the 2/3 that pass? no mention of them huh?
the owner is a known criminal. do you have his criminal record handy? court documents? cause id like to see them...even if he is/was a criminal, he has a pretty damn good school running.
they accept anyone who applies? well i am applying for jan and we'll see about that. i have heard of ppl getting rejected. if they accepted everyone I am sure there would be a massive over population problem on the island.
I am not one usually to get involved in ignorant posts s uch as yours, but I felt the need to clarify this. also the main thing that bothered me was you did not even congratulate SSRN on the acceptance, i am sure SSRN appreciates your concern but if you do not have proof aside from dirty rumors and "friend stories" posts like yours are not appreciated. I am not here to defend AUC...I am not even a student, but what drove me to respond aside from ignorance and "pot stirring" is that like all the other posts that should be filtered out of this very helpful forum, you have no foundation to say what you posted. and i am sure SSRN has noticed, like me, your 3 warnings above your name already which probably means you are just out to bash schools. please, if you have nothing good to say, do not say it, if you have something bad to say, by all means, exercise that amendment, but at east solidify your statements with proof.
by the way SSRN congrats!!!! i am very happy for you and I hope you enjoy your time there and maybe ill see you in Jan since they accept everyone hehe

    thanks!

Hi...thanks for those encouraging words!! I have heard a lot of good and bad, but in the end I have made my decision to go to AUC based on my own research, and not from a few people who had a bad experience. I hope you see you there in Jan!!

    whatever

First of all AUC does accept anyone that applies. This is a known fact. They just look for a completed application and the appropriate fee. So there is nothing to congratulate.

Second, if you are such a strong AUC supporter, then fine, that is your unfortunate downfall.

Third, AUC and ROSS are 'weed out' schools. Meaning, they accept anyone that applies, then the school fails students while on the island. Reason? Because the school only has clinical spots for about half the class. AUC accepts like 200-250 and then places about 100-125 or so into clinicals.

So please --> Go to AUC, spend 8 semesters on the island, fail courses, fail the boards, go to england and ireland for clinicals, spent over 200K on a foreign med school only to end up nowhere. . .it is your decision.

Why do you think sooooo many AUC students transfer out of AUC after they arrive there and find out all the realities! . . . anyhow, this is my last post on this useless topic.

    ...

dont get annoyed with anoncan. he/she brings a certain perspective that one needs to consider when going to any of these schools. the amount of weighting one gives to his/her opinion depends on what is important to oneself.

    IMHO only,

    dt
