    Residencies and News

Hey everyone....i was interested as well in where most Canadians were getting residencies etc. after graduating from SGU.....it seems that, although there likely will be a 6-10 month delay in getting a residency due to the writing of the USMLE step 3.......canadian students DO eventually get residencies, and generally have no problem in securing their top choices once they have obtained their HB-1 visa in any state. I've attached a list list of most of the residencies appointed to Canadian students over the last little while....it is straight from SGU and is without names for privacy.

What is also interesting to note is that ever since the results were released from the Romanow report in Canada, things have begun to change dramatically. I spoke with a few people at the RCPSC and SGU and although it is still "off-the-record", there are quite a few plans in place to make it easier for FMG's to practice in Ontario and Canada as well. For example, SGU is quite close to securing a few hospitals in Ontario and in Eastern Canada at which clinicals can be done. Furthermore, I was even told that in the next 3 years, the one year post-graduate study requirement in Canada will also change due to the ongoing brain-drain of Canadian doctors to the United States, and the expanding need for adequate health care in Canada. In other words....I would keep checking up on things, and not entirely abandon the possibility of returning to Canada. However, as it stands at this very minute.....it is still quite a long shot (and a sad one) for returning to Ontario (and Canada for that matter) to practice medicine.......albeit not an impossibility.

    Hey Ryan,
Thanks so much for the attachment. Where did you get this from? I have been looking for a while to try and find where canadians get matched. I called SGU and they never gave this to me (though I did not really ask for it!) So thanks a lot. It seems like a really good match list!
    Are you at SGU?
Things seem hopeful for us canadians,
    take care,
    Nicola

    thanks

Yeah things are lookin' up for us!

I'm actually in the process of getting my application ready to send away to SGU. I'm from ontario......and knowing how hard it is to get in here....i decided to prepare quite early, and have a backup ready.

I actually wouldn't mind (and in fact would welcome) the opportunity to study at SGU.

When I called up the counsellors at SGU......i guess i kept asking a lot of questions about canadian placements that she was nice enough to email the list......her name is Renee i think. In fact, it's not even complete yet, since they're waiting to hear back from a lot more canadian grads this year.

    anyways, are you at sgu?

    Hey Ryan,
I was accepted and am just waiting to hear back from other schools. However, I think that I am most likely going to go to SGU. I am very excited but a bit nervous as well since it is sooo $$$$.
I'm from Ontario as well- Toronto.
Are you applying for the August term?
Renee took care of my application as well- she is very nice and helpful.
    Talk to you soon,
    Nicola

    Hey Nicola,
Yeah, I'm applying for the August term, and I'm also really excited.
It's a bit of a drag that it's so much money.......in US dollars nonetheless,
but what can ya do huh?
    I'm from London........I'm at Western.
From what I hear, the entire anatomy staff at SGU is pretty much from Western.
What kind of stuff are you bringing down with you?
    Take care,

    Hi Ryan

Thankyou for sharing the file. Do you know if all the Canadian on the list obtained the H1B Visa, or some were under J1 Visa? Because there are some very competitive residency on the list such as General Surgery, just wonder if this is available for Cdn under H1B.

    thankyou again.

    visa

Hey stella.....i forgot to put that in, but i did ask the councillor that and she told me that the majority were under the HB1 visa......even for general surgery (which is what i want)!

    Hope that helps,
    Good luck
