Statement of Need for J1 Visa Denied!

    Advertisements

My wife and I couples matched into a competitive specialty in the US and now we're being told the quota of 'Statements of Need' for that specialty have been reached for the year - fyi they gave out FIVE of them!

Has anybody else encountered this? This is so mind blowing that not only could we not get residency in Canada despite scoring in the 99.5th percentile on the MCCEE exam, now they are preventing us from training in the US because according to them, they wont need us in 5-6 years when we finish.

I am desperate for help/advice from anybody who has gone through this or know somebody who has.

I feel your pain, so sorry to hear this. Will be program not sponsor H1 visa?? Discuss with program about the possibility of getting H1 due to lack of help of Canadian government
Appeal to Health Canada, explain your situation and how not giving me a statement of need will really make things bad for you

Unfortunately the program has stopped sponsoring H1 Visa's this year, and I wouldn't have time to take Step 3 anyways so that is not an option. We have started to appeal to Health Canada but it's not looking good. We also asked them about sponsoring us for our Transitional Year program but they said it was part of the Radiology program and therefore not eligible for a letter.

this sounds pretty horrible, i'm sure there have been plenty of Canadians who have done their residency training in the US on a J1, how can they only give 5 a year?

Unbelievable... does the Canadian system just really NOT need docs? Because I keep reading otherwise...

How would it help you to attend only the transitional year?

Buys you a year to get things worked out, if nothing else.

attending transitional year using J1 would prohibit using H1B for two years.
if the Statement of need is not approved this year, how and why would it be approved next year?

Fact is very few residencies are now giving out h1b, more and more j1 is the only option. There is a quota system put in place and every year this number changes depending on the speciality, this year for rads it was 5, next year it maybe lower or higher. The list is released very late into the interview season so the applicants can not plan accordingly.

The issue with canada is that specialists are considered a liability ( unlike the us where a surgeon may bring in money to the hospital)

Bottom line is that specialists are highly in demand but at the same time they are not finding work because it is not in the governments interest to pay them.

Welcome to canada, god forbid anybody would want to better themselves and do something with their lives.

The List of Need Specialties for 2014 was released on November 7th, 2013! By that point I had already sent out my applications for the US as well as had several interviews. If they want me to plan my life according to their quota system they need to be projecting years into the future instead of months before when it's already too late for applicants to do anything about their profile.

My application screams Radiology. My LOR's, my Statements, my elective rotations in the US all revolve around Radiology so even if I wanted to apply to a different specialty like IM (which I don't - ever) they wouldn't take me seriously because it's obvious I want to be a radiologist.
