Health Insurance for Canadians in the US

    Advertisements

I ran a quick search on the forum for this topic but didn't find anything, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. For you Canadians who have done or are still doing rotations in the US, where do you get health insurance from? Any specific recommendations? TIA

If I were you I would buy supplemental insurance from a place like TD. You have the OHIP, BC care card etc... coverage, plus the extra you need in the states. The premiums would likely reflect a better understanding of the extent of existing you would have. I think American brokers like each Medical school would con you into buying more expensive policies then you actually need.

    Hope that helps.

Most people don't know this, but you have to tell OHIP or BC care that you are leaving the country to study.

just curious...why do you have to tell them? What kind of coverage does OHIP give you in the US? Thanks.

I can't believe I'm spoonfeeding people today....seriously, google this stuff, I'm not even from Ontario and I can find it in about 30 seconds. Don't rely on complete strangers to do this legwork for you, sometimes they don't give you the right info (CANeh is correct, however), but isn't it better to find it right from the source? Learn this now because you'll need it in medicine...

The first link is general info about OHIP and the second gives you specific information about extended absences from Ontario and how your OHIP is affected. And yes, you need to notify them if you are not going to be living in ON for "at least 153 days in the 12-month periods for 5 consecutive years before each subsequent absence". Otherwise, you lose your coverage.
