    Question regarding maritimes/saba

    Advertisements

I was reading a thread here and it said that its easier to match if you go to SABA and are from the Maritimes. I am looking at schools to apply to, and just so happen to be from Newfoundland. Can anyone tell me why it would be better to apply to SABA?

    Doubtful.

Take for example the latest crop of residents posted on MUN's family medicine website (I took family med as an example because they take more IMGs than other fields).

    Attwood, Zach MUN
    Bazeley, Peter MUN
    Blecher, ***** McMaster University
    Boudreau, Coralie Ottawa University
    Brake, Heidi MUN
    ******, Christina Sydney University
    ******, Robert Sydney University
    Chisholm, Terese Dalhousie University
    Cutler, Sarah MUN
    Flynn, Sarah MUN
    Halvorsen, Melanie Ottawa University
    Magrabi, Hamdi Al Fateh University
    Marr, Alison MUN
    McKay, Tim Cork, Ireland
    Meeker, Blair Cork, Ireland
    Mercer, Josh MUN
    Mercer, Susan MUN
    Millen, Tarah Ottawa University
    Mossman, Drea Dalhousie University
    Newman, ***** MUN
    Pittman, Jennifer Saba University
    Power, Alexandra MUN
    Shandera, Lori MUN
    Sherrard, Adam Ottawa University
    Stryde, Peter MUN
    Thorburn, James MUN
Vaid, Ahmed University College of Dublin, Ireland
    Wade, Jessica MUN
    Wilson, Brett University of Calgary
    Young, Melanie MUN
    Yung, Chen MUN

My analysis: if you want to go to MUN for residency, then go to MUN for med school. (Newfoundland isn't part of the maritimes anyways, as you doubt already know).

Can anyone tell me why it would be better to apply to SABA?
SABA is apparently cheaper than the others in the big 4.

Saba/SGU have some university affiliations in Canada, so chances of getting a Canadian elective are higher compared to other Carrib schools.
So yes, compared to other Carribean students, Saba and SGU students might have an advantage.

SABA has no exclusive affiliations with Canada schools. Canadians studying at Caribbean schools can apply to do electives at Canadian universities regardless of which Caribbean school they are at. Note that some universities won't take Caribbean-based Canadian IMGs for electives (where they would accept students studying medicine in the UK, Ireland or Australia), and some won't take them between particular times of the year.

SGU actually apparently does have one non-University affiliation - it's at St. Paul's in psych.

Interestingly, this is one rumor that just won't die. It's been making the circuit since 2003.
