    Negotiating OSAP in Caribbeans

    Advertisements

    Hi guys,

I will be starting Ross U. in May 2004. The uni is approved for OSAP and I will qualify for the funding. My question is: Once the loan papers get down to Ross, how are the funds transferred to the bank? And which bank? The banks give out the money but I have no idea how the whole process would work in the Carib.

    Anyone with insight?

    Thanks for your time.

    - Martin

    OSAP

I am applying to AUC and Ross for September and not really sure how it all works either. When I studied in the States OSAP went directly to the school financial aid office. Have you spoke with them? Have you applied for CanHelp(Teri) as well? I will be looking in to this option as well.

    re: OSAP

    Hi guys,

I will be going to Ross as well. I have called Thunder Bay about this situation and their info is as follows:

    apply through the web
    get approved
then, the loan doccuments will be sent to the uni or you (not sure about that part and forgot to ask)
you have to get them signed by registrar
send it back to Canada with a VOID cheque
they will deposit the amount into your bank account

I will just use the TeleScotia option to transfer the money from my bank account to a credit card and obtain the amount via credit card in Dominica.
the other thing is to give power of attorney to someone close so that they can deal wiht the funds transfer.

the only i am not sure is who gets the loan documents. As soon as I am done with my exam, I will call them up again.

    Hope this helped.

    Good luck to you guys.

    thanks

Thank you for the info. KDog, I will not be applying for CanHELP as my FICO score is around 507 and they need a minimum of 650. I have paid back all my credit so in the process of repairing the damage caused. I will apply in summer for TERI loan. My dad will pay for the first semester plus OSAP pays in full so let's hope I can survive.

    re: getting FICO score

I got mine through EquiFax. I paid CAN $22 to get the report online. You can get one copy free of charge mailed to you if you are willing to wait a week or two

I am not sure about the address posted above but will check it out. It would be great if I get check it for free.

Thanks for offering me to share your 'prospective' lottery winnings. I will hold you to it!

    Good luck.

    credit

sure, and to add to it...
    random notes on improving credit.

    - always pay everything on time.
    - try not to have over 70% of the credit limit on your credit card
    - for that matter, try not to go over 50%
    - always buy things on your credit card, every month. show that you are using it, but using it wisely. even if it's only buying 50 cent gum.
    - try not to move too much. (kind of hard in my case, being in college).
when you do move, make sure all creditors have an updated address.
    - the longer you own a card the better, and the higher credit amount you can borrow the better.
    - if you've had a credit card for a couple years (or even a year), ask for a balance increase. the more credit you have available to you, the more they are offering to lend you.

    FICO

    Thanks Martin,
Just checked equifax.com and my FICO score is 706. I hope this puts me in the running for the TERI loan, as I have been counting on this.

    re: score

I checked the freecreditreport.com website and it's only for people in the US. For Canada, I don't think we have any other choice but Equifax. Sucks!

KDog - that's an amazing score. Good luck with the application.
