Canadian Applying to Irish Med Schools

    Advertisements

I'm a first year science student at a Canadian university, and I would like to apply for a 6 year medical program at Irish medical schools.

When I apply for Irish med schools, do I only have to submit my high school transcript, or do I also have to submit my university transcript? If I have to also submit my university transcript, are the grades from these two transcripts evaluated separately (so two GPAs are calculated: the university GPA and the high school GPA)? Can I get away with just reporting my high school grades?

Also, I have a few questions about financing education. I have estimated that tuition and living expenses at most Irish medical schools will be greater than $50,000 Canadian per year. If this amount is multiplied by 6 years, the total cost is $300,000 Canadian. How do Canadian students obtain the funds needed? I have looked at the webpage about financing education, and it appears that Canadian banks only lend students a maximum of $150,000. How do students cover the rest of the cost of medical school? I am aware of all the other sources of funds, but can money be lent to someone who already has a credit line loan of $150,000 Canadian from a Canadian bank?

    hey paheli..
i'd say you're in a bit of a squeeze there.. i'm surprised at how much it costs to do med school in ireland! i'd say you'll have to find your own funding if you want to go to ireland for med school. really, there's not much incentive for the canadian government or canadian banks to fund students going abroad for their training, since they are most likely to stay abroad and not come back to work in canada. so why would they shell out the cash without the return?

if you do plan on working in canada, you should just go to a canadian med school. that way it'll be much easier to get into a residency program here and you can choose to do specialist training if you like. IMG's have it tough in canada.. stiff competition and mostly only for family med spots.

The Caribbean is another, far cheaper and just as picturesque alternative. Ireland is great for education, but it's expensive as all-hell.

Just make sure the school down South is recognized, or you might have career troubles later on.

    Hey

In regards to your transcript question: When I applied for admission in first year to study in England, I sent in both my highschool transcript and university. They really only looked at my highschool one. I would assume that Ireland would be similar

I'm really not sure about the funding question though, sorry

    Good luck
