if you do have a chance at trying again at some canadian schools...

    Advertisements

if anyone considering some foreign medschools is doing so just because they are tired of being rejected here, and are discouraged, I would like to encourage them to try again here. Try until your GPA doesn't allow you to.
I have been trying for 4 years, and held in my hands 16 rejections, 8 of them without getting any interview invitations. But then a miracle happened: this year I got admitted to McGill. It is the only medschool that sent me an interview invitation this year, 8 others rejected me outright.
If your GPA is at least 3.7, you should NOT go to some place like Saba or whatever, not until you really, really can't take it anymore.
Obviously it depends on your personality, some people will make it anyway, no matter what diploma they have.

But this message is ONLY for people who are like me. Who are like I was last year, with a fairly good GPA, but rejected, desperate and hanging by a thread, ready to jump onto whatever sinking ship passed by. I'm not saying never give up. This year I was so close to giving up, that I know there comes a point for everyone when you can't take it anymore. All I'm saying is don't give up too soon.

You could have finished your MD in that time (4 years). I'm not sure I would pay such a high price to attend a canadian medican school.

congrats!!! but i have to agree with 2cents. however, you will not have to deal with alot of issues the IMG's do once you finish. in the end, you will be comfortable at home where it'll be easier to work hard at studying

yeah, what sentinelle10 said is true, but only to a certain extent. i mean, some people, like myself, know that their gpa will not be looked at by canadian med schools, even though it isn't that bad (ie. 3.4-3.5-ish), and for us, schools like saba ARE a good choice. but yeah, trying for 4 years, and finally getting in, that must feel great, but a lot of things could have been accomplished in that time period (ie. going to foreign school, getting md, getting residency) and everyone knows life doesn't last forever...each to their own i guess.
the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows. the government is corrupt and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn. we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death.

Four years is a long time to keep trying and it is really good to see persistance pay off.

Good luck in your future studies, I am sure you will make a fine doctor.

one last remark, as a reply to 2cents

I couldn't have finished any MD degree, because for the first 2 years of my application, I was still doing my bachelor.
Afterwards, I tried for 2 more years, and I did not sit at home or worked during that time: I got to try lawschool...strange as it is.
good luck to everyone with their choices, I just mean to say don't jump into something just because you feel you've got no more options left, don't jump to conclusions too soon...

no ...shes Sir John A. McDonald's daughter............

i think if she does well on her MCATS...and hits it hard this semester she shod get into a med school...considering she is in Health Sciences. I'm sure that puts her ahead of most regular science students.

    any other nonsarcastic inputs?

I wasn't been sarcastic. Really, GPA of 3.1 and 3.5 is a huge difference, considering the competitiveness of Canadian med school..If she is on the low side, she may as well kiss her dream good bye...Like I said, she has to be someone famous/influential to have a shot...

btw, I know lots of healthcare professionals, myself included (not just in health sciences, but already have a nursing/pharmacy degree..etc) did not make the cut because admission to med school is still mostly based on grades, not your profession, life experience...etc.

I'll let you in a secret just in case if you haven't realized...The avg stats for students to get in is 3.7 GPA and 30 MCAT....Most schools convert these numbers into points to determine who gets interview and who gets accepted. This is the simplest way to determine the rankings of large volume of applications. If someone has a low GPA, then his/her MCAT has to be high to get an interview. Unless there is an explanation for your friend's low GPA, chances are her MCAT score won't be high enough to offset it. Because after all, MCAT is an aptitude test...

She can always try but if her stats aren't up there, I wouldn't bet on it..
