Irish Student Interested in MU Sofia

    Advertisements

Hi,I'm an Irish student who is applying for medicine in Sofia this summer (The English program).I understand that it is recognized by the GMC and the Irish medical council.
What i'm worried about is the culture shock and the City/People itself ?Can any current students in this university tell me about this.I am also looking for any Irish or British students that i can get in contact with as i have a few questions.
It would also be great to find someone who is applying this year so I have someone to talk to about the application procedure?

Sofia is fine. It is not Ireland, obviously, and there are plenty headaches in dealing with Bulgaria in general, but if you are an adaptable person you will probably adjust fine. With that said, I helped two people come to study in Sofia while I was there, and neither one of them stayed a full semester... some people can handle it, and others cannot. This is one reason that I would strongly recommend visiting before you decide whether to attend medical school there. Almost nobody does this, but I keep recommending it anyway. It is not cheap, no, but it is cheaper than wasting a semester of tuition and getting nothing out of it in the end.

Frankly, I would say that dealing with the infrastructure and organizational problems of the medical school is FAR more difficult than dealing with Sofia itself. Bulgaria has some terrific people, and some terrible people. It has some beautiful spots, and some ugly spots. It is a work in progress. There are plenty of Brits and Irish in Bulgaria, but they are mostly living along the Black Sea coast, and mostly retirees.

(The unwritten part of the post above was likely "...because I would love to have you pay me some money to help you in that endeavor.")

My advice: Keep your eyes open and your wallet closed. I completed my degree without ever paying anyone for anything extra. No "agency fees." No "exam fees." No bogus "review sessions." Frigging nothing on the side. I highly recommend that course of action to anyone planning to study in the Balkans.

There are more than enough legitimate costs involved, thanks.

Thats not true, you can do it yourself, but agencies sure know their way around better than me and you. However i wouldnt pay them more than 1000 euros for that and i heard that they ask from you thousands of euros o_o . Balkan bureocracy sure is harsh for you guys but dont let it scare you. After all, if you cant handle signing up for the exams on your own, maybe you wont be able to cope with the responsibilities of the uni...
