    USMLE Step 1

    Advertisements

Thought of starting a thread to help those who are currently studying for the step 1...I passed and want to give you my 2 cents:

physio - taught excellent at school - if you were able to do well in this course, you will not need to spend a significant amount of time during dedicated.

Micro - also very well taught! Surprised at how straightforward this was on the step. I highly recommend sticking with First Aid only - go through your class notes if it helps you to recall the minutiae.

Anatomy - we have learnt way more than whats required for the step - the good thing is you will likely need to rapidly review the HY in FA and refer to your class notes at the same time! Dr. P did a great job and although not my highest score in med school, I crushed this part of the step!

    Embryo
    - what I loved about avalon was we learnt Embryo in our first semester, and again while covering congenital defects during path 2, so this was relatively easy to get by! spent my last week browsing through this section in first aid before I took the beast, and it was more than sufficient!

    Neuro
    - traditionally a very difficult course for many students - Avalon prepared me VERY well for this - but only if you did well in the course (90+). Remember, this course requires a lot of memorization, and no, we haven't yet discovered a way to ingrain things in our brain from lectures - STUDY HARD, and I am confident you will do fine! I felt over prepared for this when I took my exam, and if you studied hard during class, you will too!

Path - study just like the US students - attend lecture, supplement with Pathoma and Goljans - practice questions from Robbins/Rubins and Webpath - come USMLE time, you will know this stuff like the back of your hand!

Pharm - Dr. B is awesome. I barely studied pharm during dedicated because her voice still resonated in my head. I was very fortunate to have been taught by her!

Please study hard, this exam is very doable as long as you really take things seriously in med school. We are fortunate to have awesome professors who really know their stuff well...so take full advantage of it!

Congrats on passing the USMLE Step 1! You mentioned you used your class notes to prepare, what were the main sources you used to prepare for Step 1, Kaplan, Pass program etc? Also did you use online question banks, if so which ones? Thanks

First aid is gold! Make sure you read and understand what's in there, memorize the minutiae! I used uworld and USMLErx for questions. Watched Pathoma 3 times. Use DIT if you have the time, I didn't like it much but it is a very good resource for those who need a break from First Aid.

    Goodluck!

I primarily used FA, Pathoma and Uworld. If you actually studied while on the island these are sufficient. If you had several weaknesses then I would recommend Kaplan videos or Najeeb, followed by FA, Pathoma,Uworld.

If you can, do another qbank like USMLErx.

    Goodluck!

Please don't lie Avalon UNiversity School of Medecine is a jok....please save your time and money and go somewhere else. The school is not accredited!!!! Very bad school.
You need more than a good score in step one to get a residency.
    Believe me!

Doc1010 - your correct - I was lied to about the new campus but that is neither here nor there. Yes you need more then a good score, you need practice, practical experience and Avalon is lacking in this area. You are taught EKG 2 days, and then that is it.. You'll never see them again, but when you get to rotations your lacking because you are not even novice at interpretation your marginally a beginner. You get no real lab experience (only anatomy) you get no experience in history taking, or even really how to do a proper HPI you will be lacking in rotations as a student at Avalon compared to your US counterpart. Your preceptors LOR help with residency, and if you do rotations in a hospital where they have a green book residency, they already seen your "knowledge" your less likely to get an interview as you had a 12 - 4 week interview already. Coming to Avalon, was not the best choice for me but at this point I have no other option.
