    financial aid for avalon

    Advertisements

    hello everyone,

i am in dire need of financial assistance. i was accepted into avalon for the fall a few weeks ago. i was told there was a loan option, but it turned out to be an investment or real estate assets-based loan from northern trust, for which my family and i are both ineligible. they dont tell you anything about loans until after you are accepted, so i had no way of anticipating these technicalities. anyway, i have been desperately scouring the internet and calling dozens of people looking for financial help, and have come up empty. avalon does not qualify for any federal aid, i don't qualify for the only loan they do offer, and my parents are utterly incapable of offering any help. i have looked for private loans, personal loans, alternative loans, grants, scholarships, and every one some exclusive criterion that either I or the school cannot pass. i even went to the military to see if they would help. nothing. i looked into the national health service corps, but was again met with failure. the fact that avalon is not on us soil is the reason for this financial woe. the only thing that seems to remain is this online MBA thing i've been hearing about. apparently one can merit federal aid for the mba online classes and pay for school with that. can anyone elaborate on this MBA option so that there is no misunderstanding? Thank you.

The online MBA only provides you with about $20,000 - $30,000 per year. It provides you with enough money for tuition in the MBA program plus personal and living expenses. So while your expenses would be covered, you will still be short the money needed to cover tuition for medical school. Also, something to keep in mind is that doing an MBA online course is not easy. Most of the classes are not difficult; however, you have to spend a lot of time doing work for them. So, doing both the MBA and medical school, although doable, is very demanding.

If attending a US school is out of the option, try applying at a foreign school that has federal loans. They are some in various countries around the world, including a few in the caribbean. Popular options for US students have been UAG in Mexico and schools in Poland. In the caribbean, you have Ross, AUC, St. George's, and one not many people know about, Unibe in the Dominican Republic. Here are two links that could help you select a school. The first is the IMED directory of medical schools around the world. If you find a school in a particular country that you are interested in, use the second link to find out if they have federal loans. However, one thing to keep in mind is to research the school very well because some schools are in jeopardy of losing their loans. For example, I think that UNIBE, UAG, and some of the schools in Poland might be in jeopardy of losing their loans.
