Avalon University School of Medicine: Buisness or Institution?

    Advertisements

Hi, I am thinking about applying to Caribbean med school and i was considering Avalon University but I am getting a lot of negative responses from the students who are attending Avalon. I am hearing there are no cadavers that were promised 2 years ago and even longer then that. There are always promises being made but apparently no one does anything about it? The main office in Ohio doesn't even know whether students are alive or dead? I am worried to go to a school based in U.S and only worrying about green dollars. Its o.k to make money but i would want them to look after the students a little more. I heard faculty is all family and they don't care about the few outside teachers who are not in the family? does this even sound like a med school or a business or a family business? Also they have some old teacher who is a pervert and always talks against deans but tries to be good with students and doesn't know how to teach or ever is prepared? and the classes have been complaining against him but no action has been taken yet b/c he is cheap and Avalon doesn't want to loose him. Also, most students tried to be on his good sides and stopped complaining because he started making the exams harder and whole class failed almost all of the exams? And there is someone's kid who roams around in the hallways? and there is not much in the labs? and faculty doesn't do much? so please enlighten me if anyone of this is incorrect and what is the truth then i might consider Avalon as a choice or else, peace out homez!

You are focusing on the wrong things. I would recommend like most of us who are here to get an education, focus on studying and working hard. Do not get into the gossip and distractions. The key to success is to work hard. Just ask the Avalon students who are in their residencies. Good luck.

how do u focus on the right things?

so all that i mentioned are the facts? do you know how uncomfortable that environment is? I applause your strength but sorry i want to feel welcomed and like a family member and not an outsider. I don't want to be a nerd living inside of my room or in a circle of people not talking to the outside of the world. This profession requires outgoing personality not close minded. please correct me if i am wrong

I have gone through the program as well on the island and I felt the education was good and the environment to me was comfortable. Most of the faculty have been part of Avalon for years now and they do a good job in teaching. All the professors are very helpful so your facts are wrong. Now, if a student who does not study and cannot pass classes, that is their fault. If you don't want to be a nerd inside your room then possibly medical school is not for you. You work hard during medical school so that the hard work pays off as a practicing physician, and then you can use your outgoing personality to enjoy life when you are making good money. If you have so many concerns my opinion is not go to medical school, or find another medical school to attend.

I go to Avalon. Labs here suck. We don't have cadavers (they keep on saying we will, but who knows when it will happen). Anatomy professor (this is one of the most important classes in med school) sucks really bad. People do complain, but nothing gets done. The school's computers don't have internet and the wi fi sucks. Go Avalon.
Silent_Orchestra, I get that we as students are suppose to study hard alone, but we pay tuition for the professors to teach us this info we're suppose to know. Also, we expect the school to provide us with resources like working internet, cadavers, and more library space to study. Oh and the school doesn't have a printer for the students to print!
Most of the students here, do self teach themselves, but the school takes the credit for good usmle scores, when they didn't even do the work.

The only reason i'm not going insane going to this school, is because of the students and some professors in upper classes, that can actually teach.

Actually, Anatomy is not one of the most important courses (with regards to the USMLE) compared to the majority of the other basic science courses. You need to know it though to a certain degree. I got by Anatomy without a cadaver, but having a cadaver would be nice. Hopefully soon.

Just buy a printer. Spend a minimal amount of money and you can print whenever you want.
