I thought the faculty in the basic sciences were good and knowledgeable. I'm back in the U.S now studying for my USMLE step 1, and I am using a lot of my school notes to prepare. I enjoyed the atmosphere, aside for the good weather I felt I made a lot of good friends + all of the students were quite friendly. I would say most students helped each other a lot, whether it was personal or for school. The facilities did the job. I lived on campus, so my commute to school each day was literally 1 minute. The campus was not bad. Its not a huge campus, but not a small campus and thought it was the perfect size for all of my classes.

Thankyou so much for your reply MedLady! Please, if you dont mind, let me know how prepared you feel for the step 1 based on the 5th semester review and if the school truly has a good quality education.
If any other students would like to add, i'd really appreciate it aswell.

I did work hard during the basic sciences on the island, so my knowledge foundation is not bad. There were a few courses I was weak in (Pharmacology, Biochemistry), but I was able to learn them the best I could, and during the 5th semester I was able to really study hard and study even harder for the subjects I was weaker in. In general the teaching was great on the island, and the one thing I would really advise especially for new students is to WORK HARD during the basic sciences on the island. 5th semester helped out immensely because it gave me the time to really buckle down and build upon what I learned on the island. I hope this answers your question!

I agree with "MedLady" in that the teaching was great during my time in the Caribbean. The guidance was there from Avalon, but as students if you do not put your time in to study the material, life will be very tough when you come back to the states and study for the boards. Avalon has a very dedicated faculty thats for sure, and the classes were designed to not only learn the basic sciences as a whole, but learn the basic sciences so that you will be prepared for the USMLE Step 1 exam. Thus far it is working out well since Avalon students are passing the boards, and even more getting into residencies. The only thing I regret is not taking extra sun tan lotion to the island. By the time I was done, i came back to the states looking like a giant snickers bar!

Thank you so much for your replies MedLady and SilentOrchestra!! My only concern is when or if Avalon will ever get any external accreditation's such as NY/FL/CA approval. Any word on these topics that you guys have heard?

I am not to sure, but I believe the university will pursue these accreditation's. The best thing to do is call the Ohio admissions office and ask them.

Well where did you hear these bad things from and what exactly was said? You need to provide background information not just state things...

Okay so I'm a current student at Avalon. Here are some basic things one should know before they apply:
Lets do this in a simple manner...

    Negatives:
    1. Couple of the professors on campus are horrible at teaching. I believe (might not be true) that Avalon hires professors with an MD, without actually seeing if that professor can teach or not.
    2. The library sucks. We have about 10 study tables in a tinny room, for over a 100 students that attend the campus.
    3. Tests are circulated. The profs won't let you take your marked exam home, because they want to give the same exam next semester. Exams circulate, so students don't really study, they just cheat. (it will screw them up at the end). It's the administrations fault.
    4. You'll have to live on campus, which sucks, because of the landlord. (nothing to do with the school)
    5. Internet at school. SUCKS.

But what you guys need to realize is, its a caribbean med school. Most of these flaws are in every other school in the caribbean, but maybe except the top 3 ross, st george, and saba...

POSITIVES: (I actually like this school)

    1. Most Profs are amazing. Sometimes I'm amazed at how much they know and how well they can teach.
    2. Class sizes are small. These professors will know you personally, so when you need that reference letter, you know who you can ask.
    3. The students here are amazing. Everyone helps each other out in a friendly manner.
    4. School was established in 2003, so in one more year they'll get new york accreditation! (Can't wait)
    5. You can do clinicals anywhere, besides (California till 2015 and New York till 2013). I've talked to other medical school students that've said that Avalon apparently has better placement. In such a short period of time this school has done really well, they try to improve every year.
    6. There is a direct flight from toronto to curacao, for the Canadian students
    7. Our 5th semester is in the states, not on the island like most medical schools.

Overall note: All that matters at the end of the day is USMLE scores. Study Study. The better the scores, the better clinicals you'll get. No matter what school you go to.

There are a lot of medical schools to choose from, so do your research before you apply. If any future students have any questions, I'll do the research and answer those questions. Just ask.
