Hey guys, I will starting Avalon Uni in sept 2011..

I was wondering how are the studies there compared to other medical schools in the Caribbean? I have been hearing some weird things about schools that are fairly new and not old as SGU.

Also how is the new location? Is it fully developed yet? I heard 1st year students can get dorms..are they pretty good?

Also what other facilities are provided on campus? For instance: a fitness center or activities for students?

Any one know also what states are we eligible to get residency and licensing in??

If there are any current students at the university that can give me some insight it would be great...

    Thanx

    Hey man,

Every school in the caribbean has some kind of bad rep, especially the newer schools. I talked to some students from both st. james and avalon, they both agree that avalon gets better every year and has better placements than st. james. SGU is really old, so its going to have a really good track record, we can't compare avalon to SGU. If you're going to pre med at avalon and don't like it, just transfer to another school. So many student do that, due to different reasons.

The new location is AWESOME! i went to the orientation for this school and they showed the island and what it has, plus i talked to students there. Dude its like living in a small city in the states/canada...it has fast food restaurants, movie theaters, beaches, buses and avalon! lol

Dorms are really good, the cheap ones are already taken...the other two are like $750 rent+ $150 utilities+ 5% tax.........personally i think they look pretty good, but the price tag isn't.

I don't know about student activities but they are getting a new Fitness center SEPT 2011!!!

I don't know the exact list of states they are listed for, but they can't practice in: (you're allowed to do your rotations in all states, but only up to 12 weeks)
California (any other states that follow California rules) (avalon will apply in 3 more years)
New York (avalon will apply in one more year)
    Florida

That's all I was told by the students, profs at avalon, and info i found online.

Getting in touch with current students is really hard. Seems like none of them use this site. It took me a long while to obtain this much information, but seems like a new student will be more help to you than the older ones. lol

By the way, are you in pre med 1 and where you coming from?

Avalon is recognized by ECFMG, IMED and W.H.O. The ECFMG listing allows Avalon students to take the USMLE's to obtain U.S residencies which is your top priority.
