XUSOM Announces Name Change to AVALON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

    Advertisements

Statement concerning OFFICIAL NAME CHANGE from
Xavier University School of Medicine, Bonaire to
    AVALON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

In May 2010, the administration of Xavier University School of Medicine Bonaire shared some exciting developments surrounding the school. We are happy to announce that these developments have now come full circle.

The campus is operating on the island of Curacao, and has officially changed its name to Avalon University School of Medicine. Our University accreditations have remained the same, and our listing with ECFMG/IMED has been updated, and students are able to apply for the USMLE Exams under Avalon University (under Curacao).

Since our original inception in 2003, we have not only maintained, but continued to improve the quality of education provided to our students. As Avalon University School of Medicine, we will preserve our standards, while also seeking to expand our facilities and capabilities. Throughout this transition, we have made every effort to assure that the legacy and traditions we have established as Xavier Bonaire endure.

Our present ownership has remained constant, as well as the University Deans, faculty and administration team, both on the island and in the US.

If you have further questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our Ohio Admission team for clarification.

    Sincerely,

    Avalon University Administration
    Avalon University School of Medicine

Can I ask, why the change? How long did this process take? What were the requirements?

After speaking to the administration, the move from Bonaire to Curacao was primarily for the ability to expand as a school. Also in comparing Bonaire with Curacao, Curacao is a lot more developed as an island in just about every aspect, so small things such as more available flights, more available amenities, and these sort of things will make living away from home easier. Personally i had nothing against Bonaire and respected the island and what it offered. I did my basic sciences there so it was a unique experience. I did visit Curacao while i was in Bonaire, and if i had the choice i would have rather done my basic sciences in Curacao. The process did take some time for the move, because there was so much involved with the move. Fortunately for me i just finished my basic sciences so wasn't involved, but talking to friends it was a process. The name change was for the school to have a different name then the other Xaviers out there. The admissions office is in Ohio, so I believe the Xavier University located in Ohio was confusing students. Also there is Xavier Aruba so that was probably confusing students as well especially since they are two totally different schools it terms of management and ownership. I’m not sure what you mean by requirements, but if this a specific detailed type of question with regards to the move you would have to call the admissions office and find out.

So, is this name change recognized by WHO. What is going to happen when the accrediting body of the Netherlands comes to Curacao? This school did poorly on initial evaluation two years ago. Yossarrian

Avalon is recognized by WHO. You can find it in the Avicenna Directories under the country Curacao.

I'm not too sure about the accrediting body of Netherlands.

I don't think they have to be accredited by the Netherlands NVAO, only the Netherland Antillies, which is probably the real reason for making the move. Only the BES (Bonaire, Statia and Saba) islands voted to become part of the Netherlands.

I would agree 100%, much easier to get accreditation from Netherlands Antillies than NVAO.

I also agree. I guess they probably had a feeling that they wont pass the NAVO accreditation, and moved locations. If you ask me, they sure moved out fast.

Is it so you can be top in the ABC ? instead of X ?? interested to know....
Some companies use A1 Carwash, so they will be listed FIRST in the yellow pages, is it purely for marketing ? so students will find you guys faster ??

If you read my earlier post in this thread, i mentioned the name change was too NOT have the same name as the other Xavier schools out there. Also if there are 2 medical schools in the Caribbean with the same name, that would confuse you right?

We are are not at the top of the ABC's, but i guess it is an advantage of being closer to the top.

A1 carwash? Hmmm...if you haven't tried, A1 makes excellent steak sauce!
