    MCB expectations...

    Advertisements

Ok. I've read MCB is one of the hardest courses in the basic sciences curriculum, and that the exam questions are detail-oriented. When you say the professor likes to test over numbers and fine details, are we talking knowing the pKa's of the various amino acids at given pH's, or is it a little less severe than that? Perhaps along the lines of how many molecules of x go into pathway y to yield z pathway products? How much time is spent upon enzyme kinetics? (I HATE KINETICS).

The hardest questions I faced in MCB here were essay questions like, "Here is a sequence of 100 amino acid residues by their single-letter codes. What structure will this sequence fold into and why? Why is it important? Answer = Leucine Zipper, etc. etc." Should I expect this level of brutality or worse?

There is a little bit of kinetics in MCB 2 (1-2 weeks). The question you described about the 100-AA sequence and Leucine zipper is a bit extreme, but it is not beyond the scope of Med School MCB to know what kinds of amino acids are found where and why, especially the special ones like Glycine or Proline.

Aside from that, the questions are somewhat detail-oriented, but I wouldn't say as far as having to know pKas and stuff. In genetics you will have to memorize some diseases and the mutations that cause them. In molecular biology you will have to memorize names of various proteins, such as the proteins involved in the structure of desmosomes. In MCB 2 (Biochemistry) you will have to memorize pathways, key regulatory steps, and yes, in some cases it will be important to know, for example, how many molecules of ATP or NADH are generated in various pathways and the like.

And lastly, there aren't any essay question tests at AUC. Every test you take here (and probably from here on out) will be multiple choice.
