Depends on if you have a car or not. If you have a car, you can live pretty much anywhere. The hospital has an off-site parking lot with a shuttle service. Towson is a really nice sub urban area. If I ended up at Union for residency, that's where I would live.

If you don't have a car and want to live within walking distance, try to find a place in Charles Village BUT try not to live South of 25th as it starts to get a little sketchy. Also, the off-site parking lot is located at 26th & N Charles St so if you live close to that, you can hop on the shuttle rather than walk to the hospital. I lived in Camden, which is on the other side of John Hopkins. It would only take me 15 mins to get to the hospital with majority of the walk going thru the campus which is pretty safe even at night. Camden is a relatively safe neighbourhood but its a bit of a hipster area lol.

Also, don't live in the Marylander, while its right beside the hospital, the building is super old, outdated and a few students told me about the cockroach problem there. Try talking to the Student co-ordinator at Union, apparently Saba students got free housing but I never inquired if AUC students have the same privileges.

I think you mean Hampden not "Camden". I would not consider walking between Hampden and Union Memorial at night safe. it is fine during the day. And it depends on exactly where in Hampden. The part close to Hopkins is pretty nice, but not the main Hampden area. I believe Hopkins spends ~$ 6 million a year on its security budget for its small Homewood campus. There is a reason why they have campus police everywhere. You should check if "Belvedere Tower" has monthly rentals. 10 minute drive.

A hipster area sounds good to me

I will have a car but do I want to deal with driving to work? I imagine the traffic is terrible. The other problem is I need to find safe, long term parking for my car. Thanks for the tip about the Marylander, bcblade. I may drive down to the area and check things out first. Is anything on Charles N a pretty safe bet? They have The Baltimorean Apartments there but the studios look kinda cruddy for $1200

Yeah its Hampden, accidently mistaken it for Camden over here in London. I lived in Hampden and I never found any suspicious people that made it seem unsafe. However, i did live on the eastside of Hampden which is much closer to John Hopkins.

well, if anyone is looking for housing for a short term stay (<90days) airbnb.com is a great site. It sets you up with people renting out rooms from their homes. I found a nice one on st. paul street that is full of other med students, just a few blocks from Union

    craigslist is pretty good too

bottom line, avoid apartment complexes if you can, there are better + cheaper options

Are you still looking for a place near Union? We actually are moving out of our 1 bedroom apartment this weekend. We lived in The Munsey Building downtown Baltimore, while my husband completed his rotations. We are a little over a mile away from Union, you can either drive or take public transportation. We live in a safe building close to all the attractions of the city. Please let me know if you are interested. We pay 1500/month for 780 square feet, but they are running a deal now where you get 2 months free.
