Books to read before starting clinicals?

    Advertisements

Anyone have any recommendations for books to read before starting 3rd year? I'm not really looking for books to read for specific rotations, and I'm not looking for books to read during rotations. I'm just looking for a few books to serve as primers.

If you wanna read something, you can check out: 250 Biggest Mistakes that 3rd Year Medical Students Make

I picked it up and read through it a few weeks before I started, and it was interesting. Some of it may sound like common sense stuff, but at least it doesn't make you completely lost going into your first rotation.

I recommend the "Clinician's Pocket Reference", also called something like the scut monkey's book. If you read through this before, and while you go along, it will teach you a lot. It's like the user's guide for getting around a hospital, that way when you hear someone talking about things like chest tubes or swan-ganz catheters, you not only understand their indications and uses, but you have an idea how they are placed.

if you want an EKG book that too my knowledge doesn't support pedophilia, terrorism, drugs, drunk driving, or overrated polish/armenian armwrestlers, you can try "the only ekg book youll ever need." i felt it was a better educational tool than dubin's book and still an easy read.
