clerkship grades/honors grades of any benefit for caribbean students?

    Advertisements

I have come across this type of info regarding factors involved in Residency selections(outside of USMLE scores).

    • Grades in required clerkships are the most important academic criteria used to select residents.
    • “Number of honors clerkship grades” was the second most important academic criteria used to select residents in the most competitive specialties.
    • Clerkship grades are the major determinant of class rank. The most competitive specialties rate class rank among the three most important selection criteria.
    • Clerkship grades are a major factor used by schools in electing students to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (AOA). Election to AOA is highly valued by many competitive specialties. In some programs, and in some specialties such as dermatology, membership in AOA is used as a screening tool to determine which applicants are even considered for interviews

    My question is,

    1) are clerkship grades valued even when you are a caribbean/foreign medical student? Or does this apply to only medical students of US schools?

I spoke to a residency director I know to ask for his advice prior to starting my clerkships; he knows that I am a Carib student. He said to kill all of the clerkships and do very well on Step 2. So, yes our clerkship grades are important!

Clerkship grades can make or break you as a caribbean medical student. That is why around 30-40% carribbean graduates match. And it is getting much harder. Reason being residency directors know when competing with international medical students from other countries - the years of education and work experience is valued more. There are exceptions where caribbean graduates can trump that and score 99 percentile in step 1, step 2cs and step 2ck.
