i am currently waiting to start my clinical rotations and hopefully should be starting may-july. i was wondering if there are long breaks in between rotations or once you get started they move along back to back. would really like to make the 2016 match and was trying to time it out to see if it was possible. thanks

Once you get your first rotation, they'll try to get you into whatever open spots are available so most likely you won't get many back to back rotations. You can schedule electives as you wait for cores, which is the best thing to do. Also, I would recommend that you talk to your coordinator to schedule cores in advance because they fill up quickly. For instance, I scheduled my surgery, peds, and ob/gyn cores like 5-6 months in advance because that's the only time they were available. In the meantime, I got 15 weeks of electives out the way.

    Good luck

thanks for the reply. im still waiting for 1st rotation and my coordinator is really not helpful at all, she wont even tell me probable start dates or anything in the future, she keeps telling me to wait at least 30 days. i have been looking in to filling time with electives but all the hospitals i have called near me (NY metro area) will not allow IMS to do electives until all cores are completed, some will not even allow IMS due to contractual agreements with other schools such as SGU. do u know of any hospitals that will allow electives to be done during cores?

I know the school usually says to wait 60 days after turning in all documents before starting rotations. I know people that had to wait six months. Well, I know Wyckoff, Interfaith, and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical center (all in Brooklyn) offers electives and cores. RUMC in Staten Island is another hospital that you can try.

Thanks for the info but those are all affiliated with the school would you happen to know of any non-affiliates that would accomodate us. Ive called LIJ, Maimomadies, Jamaica, Coney Island, Methodist, and a few more and all will not deal with AUA or allow AUA students to rotate through there. I was also wondering if we are allowed to contact affiliated hospitals to do rotations that are not sponsored by AUA (for example Kingsbrook allows us to rotate for IM, FM, and Pysch. but would I be allowed to contact them directly to rotate through Peds. or Surgery?)
thanks again for answering the questions I really appreciate it, and if you dont mind sharing how many rotation weeks you have done and how long its been since you first started id really appreciate it

I haven't done any with non-affiliates. It seems like what you are trying is right. I called a non-affiliate hospital and they told me no so you have to expect that. I'm not sure about if you can do cores if not offered though school. I know you can do electives for sure. It doesn't hurt to try though. I would talk to the hospital first and have everything set up before contacting the school.

So far I've done 39 weeks (24 cores and 15 electives). I started last May. I had psych and IM back to back. I had couple of months in between IM and Family so I did 7 weeks of electives at the same hospital I did IM. I had 4 months between Family and Surgery (which begins April 30), so I did 8 weeks of electives and used March & April to study for CK. From April 30 to beginning of October, I have surgery, peds, and ob/gyn scheduled with like 3 weeks of break combined. So I will only have 16 weeks of electives left and will try to knock it out by February.

I passed step 1 in July 2010 and started clinicals in early September 2010. After 10 weeks of psych (6 weeks core + 4 weeks elective), I had a few weeks off. Started again in NYC in January 2011 and ended up doing my last 65 weeks straight through back-to-back. Just finished my 75th week last Friday.

to rokshana sorry i meant to write 2014 just realized i typed the wrong year but yes i mean 2014 and will be starting june 4th at kingsbrook so im hoping for 2014 and from the responses seems possible...to arkie congrats on finishing up and thanks for responding to my pm i was just wondering if you were able to get most of those back to back rotations at accredited locations, especially surgery as i have seen we only have 1 or 2 green surgery rotations and i really am interested in matching in surgery..if not is it really a big deal to do a rotation that is not green if you plan to go into that field..thanks
