    IM @ Wyckoff

    Advertisements

    Hi there,

Sooo Im looking for some feedback on IM at Wyckoff. I hear you basically dont get to do anything, but you learn a lot from lectures. Can anyone comment on what attending would be more responsive to students? Im trying to get a letter of recommendation from my IM rotation and dont want to back out of this spot because of the extremely delicate rotation situation with AUA. Feedback greatly appreciated!!

Good Luck getting an LOR. You should do a Sub I IM at a better hospital and get an LOR that way. You can get an LOR from the program director who does some of the lectures but he tries very hard not to agree to giving you one. I had one attending agree to write an LOR for me to only find out a few days later he meant I have to write it and IF he liked it he would rewrite it and sign it. He also couldn't spell if his life depended on it so I decided to decline the LOR.

As far as learning from the lectures, I learned more studying on my own than from the lectures. I think I studied about 2-3 hours each day in the library while waiting around for lectures to start. Most of the time the lectures were done by an attending who did not want to be there. It's unfortunate how terrible the rotation is considering they take 60 something students at a time.

Oh, IM at Wyckoff.... You will have to be there for sign in before 8:30. Depending on when your attending wants you there, you may have to come as early as 7am. You will round with the attending, 5-7 residents and about 12 students every morning. You'll be lucky if you even get to see the patient through all those heads.
Lecture at noon with mandatory sign in.
Free time (or time to do anything your attending asked you to do, which will rarely ever happen unless you have Dr. R. B (chief of Geriatrics)).
Lecture at 3:30 by an attending who doesn't want to be there with mandatory sign in.
    4:30pm-Done
When you are on Service (6 weeks) you will learn absolutely nothing and spend most of your time in the library.
When you are on Private (6 weeks) you will learn more depending on your attending. I was extremely lucky to be placed with Dr. R. B (chief of geriatrics). No residents round with her so she treats you as such. You are responsible for ever single piece of information concerning your patient from admit to discharge. If orders are needed, you will hunt down the resident on the case and relay the message.
Overall, try to go somewhere else.
