More than 12 week away electives?

    Advertisements

Do you know how AUA recently said we can do more than 12 weeks of away electives recently? Does NYS licensure allow that? Before we were told by Dr. B that we cannot do more than 12 weeks because our school didn't allow it, but today at Maimonides they told me that I should follow up about doing more than 12 weeks of away electives because I want to complete residency in New York and eventually get licensed here. Maimonides coordinator said its part of the NYS regulations or something, but I couldn't find it anywhere specifically. I did see a form about doing more than 12 weeks of electives at a different country, but not at non-affiliated hospitals in New York.

The 12 week rule. actually there are 2 and they only apply to NY.

Rule #1 - student may not rotate more than 12 weeks outside of the country of origin. What this really means is that only 12 weeks can be performed outside the hospital's AFFILIATES. Which means all the hospitals AUA does not have on their website.

Rule #2 - student may not perform more than 12 weeks of rotations within the state of NY. This only applies to schools WITHOUT NY approval. since AUA has NY approval you can do as many as you want in NY.

I saw the 12 week rule on the NYS DOH website but when I went to find it again, that specific page was down. I would still not do more than 12 weeks away rotations.

I e-mailed NYSED and we are only allowed a max of 12 weeks of clinicals at non-affiliate hospitals.

thats what I said... I don't think other states have a rule like this though, so if you don't mind not being able to practice in NY you can essentially set up all your rotations outside of our affiliates.

how many total weeks of electives are there? there are 75 weeks of rotations total i believe, so if you do cores of 12 weeks of surgery + 12 IM + 6 FM + 6 Psych + 6 OB + 6 Peds that makes 48 weeks of cores which leaves you with 27 weeks of electives? and if you only do 8 weeks of surgery core you have to do another 4 weeks of electives for a total of 31 weeks, am i correct?

If you do 8 weeks of surgery core you also do 4 weeks of surgery elective back to back. Its the exact same thing as doing 12 weeks of surgery core except that they count the actual weeks differently.
