When I did 5th semester there last fall, the AUA students told me there was an exam you have to take at the end of the rotation.

    Yikes

Glad to see some information about this rotation. Im from UMHS and i'm going to be starting surgery in pontiac jan 3rd and I have no idea what to expect.
Is their any books anyone would reccomend for this rotation. Does the hospital provide scrubs or do we have to buy our own? I have gotten no information from my school about what to expect!!!

I dont know about scrubs, but I think most hospitals give you their scrubs (and expect to get them back).

seems like a pretty intense rotation from what I hear.

Can anyone recommend any books that would be helpful for this rotation. This is my first rotation and I have no idea what i should be carrying in my labcoat. I was thinking a pocket pharm book, any thing else? Which pocket pharm book is the best?

    book, schedule etc

I did surgery around may of 2010 there and the schedule is about 530 to 4---5 days a week + 1/2 day or so on sat or sunday. Calls are dependent on number of other students. For instance if 9 students then q9 call. Scrubs are provided. Lockers are provided (may need to share). Sign up for cases the day before at signout around 4 pm. usually 1-3 cases per day. there are 3 teams... you will switch at half way through to a different team. Green, blue and gold. Gold is by far the easiest if you get this team you will have some down time to study. I will tell you that i did very well on step 2 and I only had 3 total questions from all of surgery AND all 3 were acute trauma questions so it is not essential to study at all. There is an oral exam however and some surgeons will ask you questions during surgeries especially breast anatomy, path etc. SURGical recall is a good book for the rotation itself.
