    AUA elective list

    Advertisements

    Hi all-

does anyone know if there is a circulating list of AUA electives and affiliated hospitals around valuemd, or is that something i need to contact the CC for? i didn't see one on the AUA website and I tried searching through the posts all the way back to 2008, but I only found a few names of some hospitals here and there...i know there are plenty at wyckoff, but i was looking for specifics...i know a lot of you had to complete some electives in between your cores, so just wondering what you're allowed to do and what you can't do until you have completed a specific core rotation. if anyone knows where i can find said list, or if you could just post what you know, i would really appreciate it. from the looks of it, it doesn't seem that the majority of students can completely fulfill all 3rd yr without any gaps in between cores due to the waiting, so i just wanted to get a heads up on what to do or what i can schedule in case i need to do that.

    many thanks.

Also, it seems difficult to do an away rotation at other non AUA affiliated institutions because usually you have to be a full 4th yr until you can apply, right? that's what i have noticed on some of the websites of some schools...so basically, if you still have some cores left, are the only places you can do electives in between cores are at AUA affiliated hospitals only? someone please correct me if i am wrong. thank you.

    Hey,

I doubt there is an actual list somewhere, but I can tell you what I know.

There are a couple of places that let you do electives before cores: Wyckoff and Jackson Park (Chicago). Some places will let you do non-IM or surgery electives before cores are completed (ex. radiology, path...).

Most hospitals want students to have at least IM and Surgery to allow them to do electives.

Also, I heard that doing an IM elective before completing the core is looked down upon by IM PDs.

As for away electives, you are right. Most places you can apply to require you to be a 4th year MS. But if you have connections, Im sure that could be worked out .

    Good luck

If you look up each of AUA's hospital affiliations individually on the acgme website you can see what electives are "greenbook" in each hospital if that's what you're wondering. Given a.c. in the clinical department will be quick to tell you 'electives don't have to be greenbook, so don't worry about that'. Anyway, I've done family medicine and I'm about to start pediatrics next week. Since my next core after peds will be IM at Interfaith on 2/28/11, I was told I could do electives in radiology, anesthesiology, and pain management to fill up the 2 month gap I'll have. Right now I'm gonna do radiology at Jackson Park in Jan. and I'm waiting to see if I'll do a 2nd elective here at Jackson Park or at Wycoff.

But radiology is not green book, so how do you reconcile that?
