rotation outside US - does AUA accept?

    Advertisements

Has anybody scheduled/done rotations outside US?
I'd like to schedule mine in Antigua, would AUA accept them?

Does anyone have this experience or have contacted AUA regarding this?

    Thank you!!!!

I would think any clinicals scheduled in Antigua would lack basic accreditation requirements. (neither ACGME or AOA) The only rotations outside the US that are being done presently are the one's in PR. And that hospital is LCME accredited.

If I were you and wanted to practice in the States I would avoid unaccredited rotations.

    What about electives?

Plus, it is not true that once can't practice in US without green book rotations. Blue are fine too, just not in all states. And once you're licenced in one state, you can get licenced in another.

But I was talking about electives - I've heard from some med students that doing a couple of electives outside US will look good on your resume (as experience in medicine in a different culture).

AOA is blue, there would not be any AOA rotations at Antigua because there are no osteopathic teaching hospitals there.

You can do 12 weeks of "away electives" in the States, basically hospitals with no affiliation with AUA. I honestly don't know if foreign away electives would "count." The coordinators don't even know how to advise you how to sign up for away electives within the states so I would not trust anything they advise about foreign rotations. (students who do away electives have to set the entire thing up themselves)

I would go straight to Dr. B himself and get info before trying an away elective in foreign territory.

Thanks for the advice. I will email Dr. B directly.
