    Psych Review for Richmond

    Advertisements

I noticed a lot of posts concerning Richmond in Staten Island so I thought I would leave a review from someone freshly out of rotation.

My group was about 12 students (this included PAs and 5th pathway students) so they split us into groups of 6. Six students remained at RUMC for three weeks and the other six went to Baley Seaton. (basically they are the same program), we switched after three weeks so we could compare and learn at both hospitals. The drive is about 2 miles so it's not that bad.

Morning report is done at 8 am at Baley Seaton and everyone must attend, role is taken. After morning report you go to whichever hospital you are assigned to. Usually we would do med renewals and some legal paperwork for new admissions. (very easy, basically a form explaining why the patient must remain in the hospital fo their own safety) Then we broke into smaller groups of 2 and would shadow a doctor while he/she interviewed their patients. The doctor would usually discuss the patient with us afterward and go over possible treatment plan and med changes.

After that we would usually pick a patient to interview with our partner and that would take 30-45 minutes. We had to turn in a write up once a week on at least one patient of interest. We also were encouraged to watch the different group therapies and see how the individual patients interracted in groups. Twice a week we attended Team meetings where every patient's case was reviewed by the staff and faculty. (This ran about 2 hours) At noon we break for lunch.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays we had afternoon lecture for 2 hours. (this was at RUMC) The doc often would interview an individual patient first in front of the whole class and then we would discuss diagnosis, prognosis, etc., afterward. We also would usually listen to a presentation that had been assigned to a student on something like personality disorders, meds and their actions, schizophrenia, etc.,

At the end of the semester we took a final exam, 50 questions and basically an even mix, which was worth 20% of our grade. The rest of our grade is compiled from the Attendings reviews (from both hospitals), our write ups, and presentations. They basically revamped the program and have said it is still subject to some tweaking for future rotations. Honestly I felt it was a very good Psych rotation and had a lot of clinical relevance compared to the other Psych rotations I've been told about.

Sure, just be aware you may not get an answer immediately. I don't come on here as often as I used to. Go figure....something about having to study more.
