yes im curious about this as well. i know ppl at ross do it all the time but it would be nice if we coudl as well...
can set up electives if you find a hospital with a residency program in that area willing to accept you - but can't do that for cores
most state licensure (in strict states) don't allow more than 12 weeks to be done outside of your med school's affiliation. to answer your question, setting up all your cores and electives yourself, no.
you can apply for away electives to do during your 4th year at programs and areas you wish to match in though.
I was just curious about a few core rotations not all of them. Thanx for answering.
Are there any hospitals that you guys know of that have accepted our students for away electives?
You are not allowed to complete cores outside of the schools rotations. This is an accreditation issue. You are allowed to do electives only outside of the school affiliated hospitals.
This was informative
anyone know if you can do any non-AUA affiliated electives first before starting cores... since some of us are waiting to get a spot somewhere.
i would really save your away electives. i believe you're only allowed to do up to 12 weeks of rotations not affiliated with your school and when there is only 27 weeks of electives, then you really don't have much time.
i'm not doing any away electives at least till next September. it usually takes awhile to apply for these and especially working out the payment with AUA and the hospital. save these up so you can do it in a field you're most interested in. for example, i want to go into EM and i'm probably going to do my first EM rotation sometime early 2010 and an away elective at a prospected program i'd like to apply to probably the following September. you don't want to embarass yourself at these rotations so my adivce is to really wait it out until you can start for real.
