    AUA's financial aid as of June/July 2009

    Advertisements

Just got done wading through the general VMD financial aid forum, but most of the posts there don't seem to be relevant to AUA (since every school seems to have its own lender affiliations).. And the posts that might have been be applicable to AUA in the past are out-dated (hard to stay current with all this weird banking nonsense going on these days)...

When I searched our AUA forum to find something that might still be relevant, I found jabee's recent post with these links...

side note: i couldn't believe it when that first link actually worked -- does anyone else find the middle of the link address ("rehomosexualent=") a bit odd? (I was expected to be linked to some crazy porn site -- but no -- it's a bank!)

When I contacted AUA financial aid to find out about renewing my existing loan (granted to me by StudentLoanXpress/GREAT LAKES for previous semesters), they said that AUA is no longer affiliated with that lender.

At the moment, the choices are
Ed Invest and BOLM, as jabee posted...

Does anyone else have a preexisting loan with SLX?

And if so, did you have any trouble applying to either of the new lenders?

If anyone has any experience or advice about choosing between them, I'd appreciate it.

In the meantime, FYI, for those of you who are patient (I guess that doesn't include me), AUA financial aid dept told me they are working on some info that they plan to send out to all
new and returning students within the next couple weeks.

although i'm no loan expert, SLX paid for my entire basic science but i believe the terms were i'd have to start paying back during or after residency. i think just because they went out of business doesn't mean we have to start paying those loans back (as long as your a full time student).

How did i not know that they went out of business?

Pretty sure I got at least one statement from them earlier this year -- just the usual interest owed update that i try to ignore (otherwise i get too freaked out)

But that explains why they;re no longer affiliated with AUA

hope not! (too bad it also probably doesn;t mean that we just never have to pay it back)

So, if you don't mind my asking, did you take a new loan with Ed Invest or BOLM? And if so, how is that working out?

maybe not out of business, bankruptcy is what i meant. i guess you weren't around VMD at the time, sift through some of the old posts - they went bankrupt and pulled out of all Caribbean schools, not just AUA

i've been with Ed-Invest since then and they've been good to me besides the interest rates. i tried BOLM before starting clinicals but they denied my application without a cosigner. there is nothing wrong with my credit so i applied to Ed-Invest and they accepted every as usual. i don't know what's up with BOLM but as long as Ed-Invest continues to accept my apps, i'll probably use them for the rest of my time. the only hassle is you have to do it every semester whereas BOLM you can apply for 2 semesters.

go to AUA general (not clinical) forum to see what's up

Not sure if this thread should even exist anymore --

According to recent posts on AUA forum, it's BOLM only. (No more EdInvest.)

Still haven't received the communication from the financial aid dept., but in the meantime, it sounds like all hell is breaking loose.
