    Waiting for rotations

I was just wondering if anyone else has been asked to wait until July to start their rotations......and if you are waiting, what are you planning on doing until you start.

I've been battling with the FA dept to get my loan since Nov and finally they ironed things out. My coordinator (TL) is very hard to get ahold of and I've called and left quite a few messages with no callback. I have a list of the hospitals and what greenbook rotations that are available so she can place me as soon as possible. I can't wait until July as my financial situation makes that impossible.

When you say you've been "working towards your rotations" what does that mean? Does it involve more than calling and going through the options with your coordinator? I admit I am getting very frustrated as the longer this takes the less likely I am to make Match by 2011.
I'm also willing to go to pretty much any state for greenbook rotations. I was told about openings for IM at JPH but not for family. I'll find out about that. I might end up going there only for Family not IM.

School is still working on the 2nd clinical coordinator therefore TL has to take care of her and other coordintor's students right now. Maybe thats why you are having a hard time to catch her but I found her to be pretty much there whenever I call her.

When you mentioned about the list for green book rotations... do you know if they have openings...I have also asked for many hospitals but the answer is the same no opening until mid of the year. Let me know if you have heard of anything??

When I said working towards your rotations...I only meant submssion of your documents and staying contact with your coordinator for any updates....this is what i have been doing.

I wouldnt mind the wait if it wasnt for the match...its geeting frustating for me also as everyday is passing with no answer from school.

whoever passed in december and got placed in january - got really lucky. i'd bet that someone dropped out of a spot and they got it. 99% of people that passed in nov-dec and got their scores into their coordinator in dec or jan are not able to start until end of april or early may. its 4-6 month wait minimum to get started for greenbook rotations and senior students that are currently rotating will automatically have priority so they can finish up and because the program directors are familar with them.

if you get scheduled for a spot in 4-6 months, its a good chance that it's only tentative. i had all of my documents within a week of reporting my score to the coordinator back in early january and i'm only tentatively scheduled for the end of april to be in new york - so get your documents done as quick as possible. nothing gets confirmed until 30 days before your tentative date given to you by your coordinator, so if your looking to be in new york - even if they tell you that you are going to be in ny for rotations, its not 100% set in stone until you know you are confirmed and they ask for you to submit the NYSED application back to your coordinator. I know this because, when i asked about being able to rotate back to back, because id like to sign an agreement longer than three months for renting a place (to save money) - i was told NO for back to back and to not sign any lease agreements until i'm confirmed. confirmations only happen 30 days before your start date at the earliest (as told to me by my coordinator) and after you are confirmed they will need you to fill out and send in the NYSED application. so it'll be around the end of march for me to get my confirmation.

so yes it is 4-6 month wait
...please don't think you will start rotating within a month if you looking for greenbook.

i suggest you either take a nice vacation and see the world, or hustle whatever you can at home. in my case i got observerships set up for me at home through networking and constant persistance. thats one observership each month. thats three references, three letter of recs, and three extra curriculars to put on my cv. not to mention ive been working fulltime and am studying for step 2 ck way ahead of schedule - so i can be prepared to handle rotations. remember - you might be in a 60-70 hour week rotation and the time to study for ck could not be there at all - so use the time you have to wait and turn it into something productive.

P.S - any seniors with information in regards to places for rent if you rotate through wyckoff in brooklyn, please PM me. id truly appreciate it.

Maybe its a bad time of the year to start rotations. I know I was told that those who are trying to graduate/make match this year will have priority...so maybe that has something to do with it?

I got my score back in mid October, and started rotations 3 weeks later (I received my score on a Wed, papers were in on Thursday, was offered a spot in Surgery on that Monday but declined since it wasn't greenbook).

I have been lucky in that I have only had a week off since starting rotations (all green so far), and have rotations confirmed until the end of April. Some of my friends who received their score in Nov/Dec were told about the 4-6 month wait.

This seriously puts a damper in things...if I can't start for 6 months and then have even one small gap it pushes my graduation date to 2012 and I've worked pretty darn hard to have my graduation date in 2011!

i called AUA clinical department and asked about rotations in NY and they said NOTHING til july...and that was THEN. i haven't taken my step yet but was just curious about a special rotation (which doesn't exist anymore)
so who knows for the NY area. funny bc i was told that most rotations are done in ny for most students. i dont think they know what they are talking about like EVER

I had my documents in by December and I'm still waiting since then like all of you.I'm not even tentatively told that maybe ill get a spot in NYC by end of April...i have been told there might be spots opened up in NYC but the preference will be given to already enrolled students....being from NYC i want to stay here and we have more options here anyways.

Do you know which rotation you would be starting by end of april?
I'm trying to be as productive as i can be...tried for observerships in few hospitals...they were booked already and now no openings till coming fall...but im still trying....hopefully i can get in somehwere.

I know it can be frustrating. But from what you said and what i'm now hearing - is there is only one coordinator trying to handle all currently enrolled students plus all the new students who just passed step - it's not easy accommodating everyone so I understand having to wait even if it is a pain. It's not like the coordinator is out to get us, you just have to hang in there and make due. I suggest that you don't bog her down with multiple messages. If you give her some space and time she will answer you. I'm suppose to be in Brooklyn at Wyckoff at the end of April. I expect them to keep their word and hopefully come March once things get confirmed I can look for a decent place to rent - NY rental costs are brutal! I know other students have been told April or May as well. I think more recent students are looking at June or July. Like I said, I hear that one of the other coordinators is not around or something - but I wouldn't know anything about it since I've had the same coordinator help me out from the beginning and would guess if it's true and there is only one coordinator for all of us, then some students could have caught some bad luck because their original coordinator isn't there to help them get set. If you are unable to get observerships in a hospital then follow private practice doctors, apply for research positions or start step 2 prep

I am FURIOUS after reading some of this. When I started in Aug 06 we were a huge class and tried to warn NS that this very thing would happen. He told us that there were so many clinical spots open that they were empty. Apparently the moron doesn't understand what a greenbook is and why it is so vital. I don't have 4-6 months to begin rotations, how are we supposed to make match on time?

Why did the school not prepare properly for this? One coordinator for this many hundreds of students?? This is **!! Between the loan fiasco and now this I wish I had never matriculated here. If I don't make 2011 match because of this stupidity then many more thousands of dollars will be racked up on my student loans. (interest) Oh and since I won't be a resident yet but no longer a medical student, how do they suggest we start paying them off? Since this is going on why are we taking on transfers into clinicals? We don't have enough spaces for AUA med students so why take on more from other schools? God this is so STUPID!
