    LOR and Deans Letter info

    Advertisements

This question goes out to all the '09 matchers, plus I think this is an important topic for discussion.

What is the process of acquiring LORs?

Where do these letters go till we start the ERAS application?

How do we keep the letters unread by us in the process?

Will the school read the letters and "advise" us on which ones to use (without divulging the actual letter content)?

What is the significance of the Deans Letter?

How do we get that from AUA?

What should we provide to the school for the Dean's Letter?

Thanks in Advance for your Replies,

These are all very important questions, and man my life would be so much better right now if someone answered them for me a year ago.

What is the process of acquiring LORs?

You ask an attending physician - not a resident or fellow. My guidelines for asking are if you have spent at least 2 weeks (4-5 hours/day) working with the attending. You should always try to ask in person, but there are times that you lose touch with an attending and you need to send in a formal letter instead. You will need a CV, Personal Statement (2 pages), Step 1 score and if possible - comments from residents that you worked with in that same program. Put all these in a folder so it looks nice and give the folder to the attending or secretary. Don't wait for them to ask - you should have the folder prepared.

The best TIME to ask is your last day. It's tough to get lots of letters in the specialty that you are interested in, so you'll need to make sure you get a letter from Medicine and a letter from Surgery. Most of these directors are used to getting LOR requests so they have a template set up. They add some personal details about you to that template and that's your letter.

Where do these letters go till we start the ERAS application?

The attending can hold on to them. A copy should be sent to the school to help with your Deans letter but AUA doesn't feel like forwarding them to ERAS themselves so during the summer before you apply to residency have the attending mail them in.

How do we keep the letters unread by us in the process?

You should not have access to these letters.

Will the school read the letters and "advise" us on which ones to use (without divulging the actual letter content)?

Probably not. I mean you should have such a good relationship from the people that you're requesting the letter from that you already know what kind of stuff they wrote.

What is the significance of the Deans Letter?

It's like an additional letter of recommendation based on comments you recieved on your rotation evaluation. If you didn't recieve any comments, it's going to be boring.

How do we get that from AUA?

You will be asked to send AUA a personal statement, CV and 2 letters of recommendation. AUA will put that together. I would share mine with you but its boring.

What should we provide to the school for the Dean's Letter?

    See above.
