    What is going on

    Advertisements

I saw the following warning on the ECFMG's directory of medical schools:

    • Note: As of January 1, 2018, students and graduates of this medical school with a graduation year of 2018 and later are not eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification, which also renders them ineligible to apply to ECFMG for the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) as a step toward ECFMG Certification.

    • Note: Currently, students and graduates of Atlantic University School of Medicine are subject to enhanced procedures that must be met in order to be eligible for ECFMG Certification and USMLE examinations that lead to ECFMG Certification. ECFMG will provide information and instructions to applicants upon receipt of application.

What is going on with this school?

Per Atlantic's twitter feed: Minister of Education makes error effecting thousands of future physicians. Error being corrected through ECFMG immediately.

Can anyone comment on a time frame when this alleged error will be corrected?

Hi Stanmack, in Illinois doing clerkships. I have the same email received from ECFMG. LOL. It would seem if we were to believe the email that the ECFMG is closing ever school in Saint Lucia. ****! All kiddos and students in every school in SLU got that email. Interesting to say the least, especially when the requirement fo regional accred is effective 2023. I have been told that there was a mistake and that the Ministry in Lucia was correcting it. I do hope they take responsibility for their stupidity and apologize to the students they keep screwing with. I am at the point where my parents are thinking of taking the ECFMG to court with this roller coaster ride of behavior.

I guess the same email went to students from other medical schools in St. Lucia. I am from a different school in St. Lucia but I also received the same email from ECFMG. There are 5 schools listed in the email. Only exception is Spartan which is already CAAM-HP approved. This will also become a big blow for legitimate schools trying to recruit students for future semesters. Who wants to go to a school if it is listed in WHO as students not eligible for ECFMG. It would be helpful if St. Lucia Ministry corrects this issue as soon as possible and give peace of mind to medical students studying in St. Lucia.

I hope for the sake of students enrolled at these schools, this is a mere mistake on the part of the Ministry. But this doesn't explain why from all the St. Lucia schools ECFMG has put Atlantic under the microscope by subjecting the school's grads to "enhanced" procedures. Something tells me there may be more to this than meets the eye. When it comes to the Caribbean schools, the rule should be "believe but verify"!

The following blog may shed some lights on the mystery: Are Carribean Medical Schools Under Investigation for USMLE Irregularities

Wow, how messed up is that, pretty shocking "mistake". The existential foundation of Caribbean medical schools (or any medical school for that matter) rests on the granting of recognition and licensure to award the MD degree by the host government, and for Caribbean medical school students seeking ECFMG certification in USA, from 2023 this foundation will also rest on CAAM-HP accreditation. That a host government ministry, supposedly, is the source of such a "mistake" does not bode well at all. As if Caribbean medical school students didn't already have enough to deal with back home stateside. Talk about giving a dog a bad name...

Call the following and get a response about where the school is in the process of getting this fixed:

Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions:876-927-4765
    ECFMG: (215) 386-5900
