    Transferring to AUSOM

    Advertisements

Hi so I recently completed 4 semesters of Basic Sciences at Ross University without having to repeat any semesters but because I had a hard time passing COMP I was dismissed. Does AUSOM take transfers from Ross and if I am able to transfer, would I have to repeat all 4 semesters?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Yes they accept transfers. You would probably have to take their med 5 if you haven't done so at Ross

do not transfer from ross to atlantic. or any low tier caribbean school, for that matter. check AUA and UMHS first as they accept higher carib school transfers. st matthews as well.

if you can not pass the comp, there is serious deficiency in your knowledge base. not to be rude, but you need to address that before looking for other schools. perhaps you should contact those schools first and if they say no, move down the chain to st james and others. your clinical rotations, if you pass step 1 eventually, are at stake here and you will want ones that are not "leftovers." AUA should still take you and has 50 state approval like ross. the rest of the non big 4 carib schools do not have 50 state certification and this will affect your residency chances immensely.

also, talk to ross and try and appeal. take an nbme after some time studying and show you are ready for the comp. dismissal from a carib school is a black mark on your record. failing the step is a black mark. do not go to atlantic or windsor or any low grade school unless you have to

Just in case, I was put in contact with a grad from AUSOM, he failed the comp at Ross and transferred to AUSOM. He passed the steps and is in 3rd year residency in a hospital in Hackensack, NJ in Internal med. Call the school maybe they can put you in touch with him. There was also another Ross transfer in New Brunswick, NJ. I think she is 2nd year in Peds. Ask to speak with her too, she was very nice and gave me great advice.

switching from Ross to a "lesser" school like UMHS or Windsor, how does that work in terms of applying for residency? I know as an IMG it is already insanely hard to land a residency, so does switching school in the Caribbean put a real big red flag on your application and essentially put your chances near 0%?

It depends why you transfer. It definitely makes it more difficult tho. I feel like after you transfer from a bigger school to a smaller school, you close the door on more residency options (some places filter based on school). Essentially, you have a smaller pool of places that may grant you an interview. If you have to transfer, score well on your steps and you can overcome it.

I did it and matched this year.
